I know this may sound stupid, but what does it look like? How do you get it? And how do you get rid of it?

My DD#1 starts preschool in 3 weeks and I just want to have some knowledge of this stuff! TIA

The ones on dd's head look yellowish and almost see-thru, as they feed off the head they get brown patches on their backs. They are about the size of sesame seeds. The nits are sometimes hard to spot depending on your child's hair color. My dd's had white colored nits but also brownish/black ones too.
DD is almost 12 years old and i also have a 15yr old, this is the very first time i have ever had to deal with head lice and i hope it's the last! I believe my dd picked it up from a friend's house that she spent the night at , most likely got it off the bedding of the girl.

Unfortunately back in high school I got head lice BAD!!! Basically because I really didn't know what it was or what the bugs looked like. I baby-sat for this person and stayed at their home. They knew their daughter had them but I guess being embarassed didn't want to tell me. Anyways at first my neck and behind my ears started to itch real bad and my mom said it was probably my nerves. One day as I was scratching my head I felt something that felt like a lil bug so I pulled it off. At the time I didn't think that it was lice because we live in the country with alot of creepy crawlys. Then one day when I was babysitting the lil girl started scratching really bad and I looked on her head thinking maybe she had a tick or something and I found over a dozen of these lil bugs infested on this poor lil girl. I found a dictionary in their home and looked up the word head lice and it described it with a small drawn picture of one. EWWWW I called her mom and she played dumb and said that it was probably fleas and then later I found out that they had them for awhile. Anyways they are about the size of a flea shaped like a grain of rice but dark in color. The nits are white and will attach to a single strand of hair then you have to pull the nit down the strand in order to get them out. They have boxes of Nix that will kill the infestation out but if you have long thick hair as I did it is almost impossible. They say Dawn dish det. or vinegar kills them too. I had tried everything and was in tears alot because as soon as I thought I had taken care of them then I would find another one. I spent alot of money on boxes of that Nix stuff. I washed my hair everyday and I am a clean person. You have to clean all the bedsheets, toys etc. My mom and dad only washed their hair maybe twice a week and they never got them. Eventually I bought me four boxes of ogilvie home perm (that's how many I needed for my long hair) and killed them for good!!!

it is easier for them to attach to CLEAN hair, I also heard that tea tree oil helps prevent them, you pour some into your shampoo.

On my dd they were black and the size of sesame seeds. The letter the school sent home cracked me up. On the bottom they had a picture of one--the picture was about 1 1/2 inches big. Beneath it it said "Picture has been enlarged". If my dd had had bugs in her hair that were that big I would really be freaking out .

Make sure your kids know not to share hats or hair brushes/accessories. That's how my dd got it last year--playing beautician with girl up the street.

Cant miss them. Especially if your child has dark colored hair. They look like little white dots, those are the eggs. If you comb through your childs hair with a lice comb sometimes youll find the black bugs. So if you see a kid constantly itching his head - he may have lice.
Ive had lice 2 times when I was a kid. I got it from my friends house. Its easily transferred from one person to another.
When your child has lice you need to wash and clean big time. Wash all pillows, bed sheets, blankets in hot water. There's lice spray you can use to spray on things that cant be washed. Its alot of work to make sure all the lice are gone!

I've never seen them, but in first or second grade, I got them. It doesn't matter how clean your kid is, it comes from head to head contact. I got it by hugging another little girl who had it. Come to think of it, that's the same girl who later gave me chickenpox. Hmm.

Anyway, my mom got that RID stuff at Longs or whatever and combed the stuff through my hair a few times and that was that.
