I have decided that his year we are not putting up the big tree. (MIL thinks it's terrible) Last year I purchased a set of 3 small skinny trees that are pre-lit. We will just put a few decorations on it and call it good. My boys will be 13, almost 7, and 3 at the time. How bad is it to bail on the big tree thing?

Of course it's bad! I'm pretty sure Santa won't stop at any house that has a tree that is less than 6 feet...

I think the holidays can be whatever you want them to be...I don't think anything is 'bad'.

oh the horror!!! no!! it should be 6foot tall and only natural

seriously though, we live in a small apartment, and we have used a small artificial tree for the past 5 yrs, and will do so again this year, but I'm thinking of getting a small prelit one.

Tell your MIL she can drag up the big tree, put it up, decorate it, and take it down after Christmas if she thinks it's so bad . She should keep her opinions to herself. If it works for your family that's all that matters.

My MIL has a Charlie Brown looking tree. My mom only puts up the top half of her big tree so it is small.

You can do whatever you want! We have a smaller home and anything too big- takes up too much space and it just does not look right. Last year we had a smaller skinnier tree and when DH's family came over- I was thankful because when we had our other tree- it took up too much space!

I say go for it- if that is how you want to decorate- I say go for it (personally I don't put ornaments on the trees- it just makes them look to busy! I get looked down upon for that from my MIL!).

I agree that your decorations should fit the needs of your family. Don't worry about what other people might think.

I really think people are getting away from the "true meaning of Christmas" mentality. Yes, a big tree might be pretty, but if it is a hassle to deal with, why start the season off with bad feelings over the tree? Set up your small trees, and tell your MIL they can come look at her big tree if it will make her feel better!

If you have the room and the money to splurge on a big tree then do it.

I usually get a small/med sized tree - from Target. Our place isnt that big and a huge tree would take over (Like on National Lampoons Christmas Vacation - the living room scene when he cut the ties on the tree and the thing sprung out like an umbrella) lol

Plus small trees are easy to take care of and easy to dispose of. Plus having a tree is better than no tree. Get and use what makes you and your family happy.
