Yesterday was my monthly stint as sub for the WW meeting in a nearby town. Since I have been doing it, since January, this couple has come in. They always come in together, but one comes up and pays me for both before going to the leader to get weighed. The wife is a tiny thing who is at her goal weight and the husband was about 300 pounds, but has lost about 25. He is struggling, but he comes consistently.

Well, Saturday the lady comes to through the line and hands me her card and her husbands. I said, "Are you paying for him, too, like usual?" Her response, "No, he died last month."

OMG! I then see she has not been since my last month down there. She also has been crying and is shaking. She is about 63 - younger than my parents! I just sat there shocked! I didn't ask for details, but I felt awful for her. She had lost 10 pounds in a month and was actually below the lowest weight we are supposed to allow, but I let it slide because, honestly, she probably knows she has not been eating. She just wants to get back to her routine and I think WW is a social outlet a bit for her, too. I just felt so bad for her! (Oh, and I don't care if I get in trouble, but there was NO WAY I was making her pay for the 4 meetings she missed since her husband's death.)

That is so sad...I'm sure it was pretty hard for her to be there. I'm with you, I would definitely not charge her for the missed meetings either, that just doesn't seem right.

Claire, You scared me there for a minute. I thought you meant he died while at the meeting.
That is sad, I am sorry that she is having to go through that. I don't blame you for not charging her. It will take her time to heal.

This is what I thought you meant too from the title!! That is really hard for her to do I'm sure. Both of my parents were patients at the same oncologist office. I remember taking my mother to her first appt there after my dad died, and staff who didn't know about it asked my mom where he was. She cried the whole time. It was really hard. Hopefully your person will get some comfort from getting back out and into the things she did before, although since they did it together I'm sure it will always be a painful reminder for her.
