i think im a bad mom at times. im really numb to crying and it doesnt phase me whatsoever. well, obviously not the "something is really wrong" type of cry...but the contant "she hit me, she took my toy" cry im pretty numb to. wlell, i hear it allll day long.

i see that it bothers alot of friends and relatives when i dont jump when they cry...nor do i jump when one falls down.

anyone like me here or do i need to soften up a bit?

You're not alone Kelly. I find that nine times out of ten that when for example, my seven year old wails, "He hiiiit me" about her brother, she was also doing something to provoke him. Now I don't condone hitting, but I am a little lax on the sympathy when basically "you asked for it". Also, I fail to be real sympathetic to people who have been told not to run in the house, run anyway and bump their heads.

Depends on the cry. We all know that there are different kinds of cries. I DO listen but I don't jump if it is a 'fake' cry or not serious. I'm there in a heartbeat if a kid is seriously hurt, though. Even in the grocery store, if I hear a real cry I'll want to go save the kid.

I can tell the different levels of crying. Most I can tone out, but there are a few that just make me jump. Those are the real cries as opposed to those pretend cries.

I know their different cries. I tune most of them out. I know the I'm hurt cry or something really is wrong cry and jump on those. If they fall down I don't react unless they start to cry. It drives my relatives mad. My SIL is the type of parent that stresses out over any cry. That drives ME mad.

I can totally relate. Thankfully the 4 1/2 and 2 1/2 year are pretty much over the crying all the time thing but my baby (18 months) is the BIGGEST drama queen ever. No one can believe that I don't rush over every time she sniffles but she always just does it for attention (or to get her siblings in trouble) then stops crying on a dime when something catches her interest. Thankfully my family is finally pretty much "on" to her.

no i dont think you need to soften up at all. i am the same way, if you jump to their every whimper youa re just babying them and they will know that every little wimper will get you to come to them.

With my 9 year old and 4 year old DS's, unless it's the "I'm really hurt" cry, I mostly just tune them out, unless it starts escalating to the point of that shrill noise that startes to hurt my head, then I gotta make them tone it down!

With Tommy, he makes no sound when he cries and I can literally sense a change in the air if he needs something.
