Not mean at all. I applaud you for it! We had to do the same a while back. Our kids had a tv in the play room and they just got too attached to it. It became automatic to walk into the house and click on tv. And when in the playroom they watched tv and never played. I really do love the disney sitcoms (hannah montana, suite life of zack and cody, cory in the house, hsm, all of them) but I just got so sick of hearing it 24/7. Now they are limited to tv ONLY for 1 hour at "quiet time" then at night IF hubby and I watch they can watch our shows with us. That is it!!!!

I am trying not treat the whole thing like a punishment. I have NEVER said anything like "you do this this all the time so no more!". I told them that we are just going to give our brains a rest from TV so it can learn some other things. Thankfully my 3 year old has been a little better with it all this afternoon. We went over to Grandma's earlier and he immediately said "Mom said no TV today" and turned her TV off and went on to play with her dogs...so I think it is working (for today).

Honestly....no.
Actually, I don't even know why I pay for cable...the little one (11) doesn't watch it at all, I watch maybe 1/2hr per day, and DH watches about 1/2hr in the morning!
Including DS (19) we have 4 TVs! Why?!?

This is why my kids do not have hook up to the satellite in their rooms.

I limit the time they spend on the tv.. and yes, my kids have said they don't have anything to play with, and it looks like Toys R Us threw up in their rooms... or they say they hate all their toys..

Nope, not mean at all! I've had to do this for my kids a time or two. I like to let them watch Disney or educational television, but when they start in watching Power Rangers and Cartoon Network, I have to pull the plug. I notice they get more mouthy with the amount of television they watch.

Good for you! We limit Avery's TV watching during the day...actually, she almost never gets to watch it anymore...we leave for work/school at 7am, get home at 1pm, she naps and then usually plays outside or does arts & crafts. On the weekend (Friday-Sunday) we have a NO TV rule (except for DH and I watching TV at night after the kiddos go to sleep). We only have the radio on. Avery has gotten used to this (she's 3) and usually asks if she can turn the radio on for us. :
