My mother use to take us lardsaling with her all the time when we were little I have never in a mil years ever thought to ask for the price to get lower. I have no idea what some people think. Som poeple now days just think things are owed to them for nothing. I think it is just wrong.

I guess at my sale in a couple weeks I am gonna make a neon green cardboard sign that says "priced as marked". I have never had a yard sale, but been to plenty & never even thought of being that way, heck, if it says $1, I'll give them $1. I guess they are probably professional yard salers & push their way around with most people. Good for you for standing up to them.

I know what you mean, some people I tell ya.
I had 2 garage sales and people are animals. They want to pay almost nothing for stuff thats pretty new and in good shape.
When I go to yard sales, I dont negotiate and pay what the person wants for it.

I never dealt with someone trying to steal something, that would make me laugh. geez!

I get a kick out of watching people try to park, one time at one of my sales some lady parked too close to another person on the street and the guy paid for his stuff and was leaving so he backed into the ladies car (front bumper) and he just took off. I giggled as I watched that and the lady didnt even notice. I hate it when people park all jacked up and are in a frenzy mode to buy peoples stuff.

ok I am one of those people who will ask for a deal. Usually only if I think something is priced high. I always think it doesnt hurt to ask. I will usually just ask if they will take less on an item and if they say no I usually buy it anyway. I dont always do it but like I said only if it seems to be priced high. I would never steal though. That is just wrong.

I have had several yard sales, and yes, there is the occasional oddball, but 99.9% of the people have been great and really happy to take all my junk away. I never mind haggling for a price, because to me that is the fun and beauty of yard sales... you can get really great deals.

I find a lot of people really overprice their stuff at yard sales. Most sales around here have clothing for 25 cents to a dollar. So, I'm sorry, but if yours is priced at five dollars per dress, people *are* going to try to talk you down. It's not meant to be hateful or extra-super cheapness; it's just the fun of haggling. Some people (buyers and sellers) do get nasty, but most are very pleasant. I love talking to people at yard sales... I would never let a few bad apples stop me from having another. People like the ones in the beginning of this thread (the buyers/thieves speaking French) probably make people miserable wherever they go.

I had a sale a few weeks ago, just a quick one, to make some quick money. This lady shows up with her dh or whatever he was, and asks me for baby things. Then she grabs a huge pile of stuff, and when I counted it up, it was about 20 items including outfits. SO I quoted the price of $11 for all of it, thatis WAY less than $1 an item. She gave me a nastly look and said she only wanted to pay $4 for all of it. I was like NOPE sorry, so she dropped the stuff on the ground and walked off. Well she must have stole something, cuz the kids came over and told me they didn't pay. Whatever.

Well she shows up again today with 3 ladies and a bunch of kids. The kids plant themselves in front of all the toys and start playing with them. The same lady grabs a Gymboree dress, (I didn't ebay it because the hem came undone and i"m too lazy to fix it) and a 3 piece women's business suit (it belonged to my grandmother, too big for me Its a Jackie Smith). The suit was in MINT condition. She asks me how much and I tell her I want $5 for the suit, and and $2 for the dress. She gives me a nasty look and puts the dress back but now wants the suit and a pair of shoes and wants to pay me $2 for all of it. I said NO WAY. She keeps insisting. I'm like NO! Then dh gets upset and tells her, LOOK this is the price, either you take it or you don't, you can leave. She pulls $5 out of her wallet and says she will pay no more than $3 for both items. LOL I only gave her change back of $1.50. The nerve!

We also have a brand new tv set for sale, its a 27 inch TV with DVD and video combo. Dh had to buy it for work, and its useless for us. Last yard sale he put a price of $30 firm on it, but no one bit so he lowered the price to $200 FIRM. Same lady comes up to me and says, REmember last time I offered you $100 for that TV? I said NO I dodn't (she didn't!) so she says well I will offer you $100 for it. Dh was like The price is $200 firm take it or leave it! She left it. LOL

THEN, her 'friends' take about 30 of the 50 pair of kid shoes i had out and put them in a big pile and ask how much? So I count up the shoes, and say $1 a pair, so thats about $30. They refuse to pay it, they insist that I shouldn't not take more than .50 for them. They are all in GREAT shape, totally worth $1! Ya know if they weren't so nasty to me I might have tried to work out a deal, but they were aweful! One lady comes over with a pile of clothes, "HOw much?" So I tell her after I count up the items, and she doesn't like tha tprice of that either! I finnally said, YOU KNOW WHAT? You can't even get a pair fo shoes for $1 at Goodwill! What is your problem? The one lady says, "OH I don't go to Goodwill" I was like there is one in NOrwich, and she goes, "I know but I hate that place, I won't go there" Probably because she can't rip them off on the prices like they are trying to do to me.

SO in the end, they stole a pair of shoes, and left all the stuff they didn't buy in a huge pile for me to reorganize and put away. HOW annoying! Dh saw the one women stick a paif or little brown sandles in her purse. I was like why didn't you say anything? Cuz he didn't want to cause a sene with others there, when he wasn't sure if she already paid for them or not.

They were Haitian, and just kept speaking french the whole time. I just KNOW they were talking about me and trying to figure out how to scam me. When they got up to leave, one of the kids threw a toy at Cameron. NICE!

Just lovely. I have my first blacklisted customers. LOL!
JUst reading your post gets my blood boiling. People do want something for nothing. I had alot of new kitchen items cheap and they think since they are taking alot of it off your hands your suppose to give them an even bigger discount than they are already getting.
I was selling my ds's decorated t-shirts for a quarter apiece in good condition. Someone asked my if she can have 2 for 1. How cheap!!!!

They were already four for a dollar and she wanted to buy them two for a dollar?????

I rarely have yard sales as I have to pack up all of my stuff and take it somewhere...and we do alot of passing down around here, so everything is worn out by the time we're finished with it. I've never asked someone to take less for something at a yard sale...if I don't like the price, I just don't buy it. However, I don't think bad of someone for asking and I'll usually say that I'll take the offer unless it's something that I can get more out of somewhere else (something big like a TV or something)...besides, I'd rather give it to them for less and not have to pack it all back home or take it all to the Goodwill and give it away for free.
However....I do hate to see those coming that think you should sell them a $3 item for .50...not gonna do it. And if they think they need to steal it???? They'll pay for it somewhere down the line!!

I absolutely understand your frustration. Something similar happened to me. Only the group came early as I was setting up. I had a sign that said all clothes not marked are a quarter. Well I had 3 big boxes of boys clothes that I hadn't marked yet because it was over 2 hours before my sale was starting. Well the next thing I know I have 20 customers and the group speaking another language were grabbing all my boys clothes, Nike, Levi, Old Navy, OshGosh etc... winter coats, snow pants, jeans you name it. Because I had the signs posted they wanted it all for a quarter each. I did honor it and told myself that it probably wouldn't have sold if it was more and at least it was gone. I pulled the boxes in the house after the first wave of people so I could mark them but ironically they didn't sell as well later either and I gave tghe leftovers to Goodwill for free anyway.

On a side note I will bargin with anyone. I take in to account the price they are asking, the normal going rate in our area for something similar, and the time. If the garage sale is 8-12 and it 11 I figure it's picked over so it doesn't hurt to ask. I'm not rude and will gladly accept a firm price. May or may not still buy it though. Mostly it's because if I don't know if an item will work or fit where I want it and I think the price is high especially close to the end of the sale. I know $3 is a good price compared to a store for a dress shirt or pants but at a store I can try it on or return if it doesn't fit.

I won't have a garage sale. It's just seems like a ton of work for the quarter I could make from the item and then there is always stuff left at the end to pack up anyway. I usually just pass the items down or take them to the goodwill and get the right off on our taxes.

I went to a sale once early in the morning (not before it started) but the "professionals" were already there shopping. I could not believe the way they were acting. I got shoved aside and cloths grabbed out of my hands. I will never again go to a sale in the morning. I would rather brows through whatever is left than to have to fight with someone over an old used shirt...jeesh.
