My doorbell rings this morning at 7:30 and it is my neighbor from up the street. He lets me know that his, ours, and another neighbors mailboxes and paper boxes were knocked off their posts last night. The three neighbors below my house all had mailboxes in tact. The last house down ends in a cul de sac and it just so happens that the boy living there, with his mom, had a party last night. While my other neighbor was calling the police, I went down to approach the party neighbor. (Keep in mind this is so unlike me--I hate conflict and try to avoid it, but was really pi$$ed off) Well, the boy (lets call him M) was in the process of picking up beer bottles and cans. He did not see me pull up--he is at the pool area--so I say "Hey, M did you have a party last night?" Well, he just looked at me and asked why. I then told him about the mailboxes and he said no one had said anything about doing it!! I the said "Like they would!" He said he would ask and see what he finds out. Then the mom came out and I asked if there was a party and she said yes, but there was not supposed to be one and that she thinks all of the kids from the local high school was there. I then told her about the mailboxes and that a police officer was on his way to investigate. Well, I have to say she did "talk" to her son and more or less made him take the blame for it. The officer went and talked to him and his mom said that they would reimburse us for the damages. The officer then came back and told my dh that the boy seemed like a good person. What he doesn't know is that this boy is notorious for going through our development at like 30 miles per hour and is known to do drugs and of course drinks a lot. He is out of high school but lacks much in maturity. We will just see if we get reimbursed. I just don't see the fun of damaging someone else's property.

Blame Stand By Me and Dazed and Confused (played with a trash can) for giving birth to 'mailbox baseball' ...I'm sure kids played it before...but those movies glorified it....

I don't get damaging another persons property either...and not b/c I'm an adult and know better, but b/c my parents raised me to have respect for other people and their property. I can't believe you went down there! GOOD FOR YOU!! I'd say you were plenty mad to do it...and rightfully so. I hope they make the kid follow through and he has to pay for it....
What did Mom have to say about his party? Other than there wasn't supposed to be one... And how old is he that's he's out of HS but still having parties with HS kids? Just out of HS recently or like the 23 year old in Varsity Blues still going to the HS football parties?? First image that came to mind (Hey...you TOLD me to watch some movies this weekend! ) Least I got you to smile!

Good for you for standing up for yourself.

I'd give him a specific amount of time to reimburse you and then I'd start a "papertrail" of certified letters.

Guess you're off to Home Depot to start pricing a replacement. I know my mailman wouldn't deliver any of my mail if I didn't have a clear and standing box.

She said that she knew that he was going to have two other couples over, but not a huge party! He is only about 19 so he has only been out of school for a year.

You have to keep the mom in mind. She began having an affair about two years ago with a football coach from another high school. Her dh left, and he was the only stable person the children had.

Shell, you and my dh could talk forever!! He is a movie freak, can quote lines, knows all actors and has watched about all movies that have been produced!

And yes, you did make me smile!

I've had my mailbox destroyed twice and turned it in to the Sheriff's Dept, but never thought I'd hear anything. However, a few months later, I received a check in the mail both times for the damage done...they reimbursed me like $14 for a $5 mailbox...I was thrilled that they even made the perpetrator take care of it!

WOW

A lady that I worked with had her mailbox damanged about 3 times in one year. She never called the police though, I should have told her to do so and get reimburesed. She also had her garbage can stolen WITH the garbage in it!!
