I actually paint glass jars. Usually the ones you get food out of. The labels are easily removed by soaking them in some dishwasher (the automatic kind) detergent in a pot or the sink. A couple of hours and the labels and the goo slide right off!

Goo Gone will definately work...if you don't have any though, try nail polish remover.
