We found out today that my Grandma, who is 75 has MS. She started to get blured vision and went into get checked out. She is in pretty good health, nothing else wrong. The doc said it is pretty odd for someone her age to just be getting MS. Does anyone have any experience with this type of disease? What could we expect in years to come?

The first thing I thought when I read the title of your post was that I'd never known anyone that old to get it. It's more common for people to develop in their 40's or around that age. Did they rule out all other neuro problems before diagnosing her with that. I've just never seen that....but then I haven't seen everything I guess LOL.

The problem advising you on the course it could take is that there are so many variations of MS. Some progress rapidly, others slowly. It usually eventually progresses where the person loses muscle control and eventually often their mental capacities. But since your grandmother is so old, she may die of other causes before the MS kills her. HTH

My dh's grandma was about the same age when she was diagnosed also. she also was in good health otherwise. dh isn't close with that side of the family so I don't really know much. I do know that she is on a gluten free diet. maybe go to their website?

I found a really good article for you from the Mayo Clinic on MS. It describes the symptoms, how to diagnose, treatments, and the different types of MS. It is fairly detailed so if you have any questions about the terminology let me know and I'll help you (I used to work as a neuro nurse). Hope this helps you find some answers. Good luck to your grandma.

Oh gosh...I'm so sorry. Dh's uncle was diagnosed with MS about 10 years ago when he was in his late 60's. I'm not sure what type he has but the doctors told him/us that getting it so late in life is a bit of a blessing because it often progresses very slowly. I hope the same for your Grandma! He really does GREAT with it, knows his limitations but it hasn't stopped him from taking a bite out of life.

ms can be very dibiltating.. i'm sorry that sucks and at her age that really bites... they do have shots now that can aliviate(sp) alot of the symptons we know a family where the father and all 3 boys have ms(kids were diaganosed in there teens) the dad and two of the boys get some type of shot and you would never know now that they have ms at all.. the other sons insurance will not pay for the shots and they are very expensive so he is like an old man and is only in his 30's now... so that is sad to see the others doing so well and because of insurance he is not...

maybe the shots would help her i hope the drs have a plan of action because ms at 75 could be very devistating...she is in my thoughts and prayers.
