I would highly recommend paying the extra for a seat for infant if you are going on a long flight. I took my daughter in my lap when she was 18 months old. It was horrible, because I was in the center seat. So, she was either kicking the gentleman to my right in the window seat, or the lady next to me in the aisle seat. It was also hard because you can't really coddle them. Her legs would kick the person sitting beside me. To make matters worse, I couldn't get my seat to recline at all....I really thought I would loose my mind! It was a flight from CA to NC which was 5 hours long. I do recommend taking at minimum a little umbrella stroller. You can actually find smaller ones that will fold up and fit in the overhead compartments and then it is sweet, because you just roll the kid right on the plane and then unload. If you don't find one that small, you can always just check it at the gate when you get on the plane, you just have to remember that everything that goes with you has to go on the belt for security.....speaking of which! You cannot bring any drinks with you. You will have to buy bottled water after you go through security and you need to check the requirements on ALL of your diaper creams, etc that you have in your diaper bag. You have to put all liquids/gels in a clear, quart sized bag and you are only allowed one bag per person. So, any lipstick or chapstick you have in your purse and anything in the diaper bag. The size of the cream or ointment is also limited to something like 3.2 ounces. You should really check on this so that you do not have to throw away some expensive cream. You should look at the labels on your containers because they really mean that the bottle/tube has to be that small. You can't have a 8 ounce tube that is only a quarter full. They will make you throw it away.
As for US Airways, I have always found their staff extremely nice and cooperative!
