We had the heating & air guy out once and I asked him about it and he said it's possible we need all new duct work! (way too much money) So instead we close off the vents to other rooms, but I was wondering if you guys have any ideas how to keep my boys warm at night!

I just got them all flannel sheets for their beds! Plus new, warmer blankets! We make sure they wear long sleeved pjs on the cold nights! Their pants are the tighter ones so they stay down pretty good! We put socks on them and will usually throw an extra blanket of them, just in case! They don't seem to mind too much, but I feel so bad since our room is nice & warm! (it's closer to the heating unit)

I was thinking of getting some of those magnetic covers to cover the extra vents so that it COMPLETELY covers the extra ones at night!

I was also thinking of making them those little heating pads things?? Do you know what I'm talking about??? Kinda like little mini pillows filled with rice or something that you can heat in the microwave??? Does anyone know what I'm talking about??? Do you know how to make them and is this a good idea or not??

Any other ideas???
Thanks!!

On really cold nights we just bring everyone in our bed!

But I was thinking about those rice bags as well. We have one that we've been using on my daughter's ear. Works better than a heating pad because it doesn't get so hot that it burns her and I don't have to worry about plugging anything in. But I read where some people use them on their feet.

Here's a link to a website that shows you how to make some cute ones. It pretty much is just bag full of rice inside another more decorative bag. Make sure you make the outside washable -- my daughter vomited all over her's earlier this year!

What I do for our household are the following.

I make each of us fleece sheets and flannel pillow cases. I then make fleece/flannel comforters. My girls stay WAYYYY cozy this way!

I make the rice bags for presents every year and I make a new set for each of us every year!

Our kids' rooms also get very cold at night. Our home is very old and the heat hardly works upstairs where the bedrooms are at all. We covered the windows in plastic, which has already helped alot, extra blanket on each bed, warm jammies and socks (if feet are warm you tend to stay warmer), and a space heater. I plug the space heater in one hour before bed to warm up the room and run it until I wake up in the middle of the night. Sometimes my oldest turns it off before I get to it because it gets so warm.

Thanks Melsb, the more I think about this the more I like it! I think I'm going to make some to give out at Christmas too! DH's knee and back sometimes hurts, his g-ma would probably like this too!!!

Hmmm...

Oh, hey Southernmama & LJGZsmom, you guys replied while I was replying!! (i was out of the room for a bit)!

Thanks for the replies - I'm gonna have to try the flannel pillowcases, and maybe fleece blankets! My boys kick them off though!

I'll also have to talk to dh about putting plastic on the windows! I am thinking a lot of air gets in there! Maybe my dad can help me re-caulk it! Or they make those little door thingy's for drafts, maybe one on the windowsill would help as well!

Keep the ideas coming!!! Thanks!

Do you happen to know what the actual temp is in their room?
How cold is cold?
How warm does your room stay?
Are the kids complaining?
How old are the kids?

After I hear the answers, I will tell you what we do in our house.....our house was built in 1894........and it gets cold in our bedrooms too.

One of my sons use to get cold a lot at night......he started wearing a hat to bed (knit cap). He loves it and it has really helped. Made me remember that people use to do that in Christmas songs (Mama in her nightcap)!

All our rooms get really cold in the winter as we have NO heat vents. We have a gas fireplace at one end of the house and than an old heater on the other. We are going to put plastic on all the bedroom windows this weekend, plus insulate all the doors. I too thought of getting the boys each a heating blanket, but I was worried about them finding the control and messing with it. I think that I may still get them one, but I thought why not put it under their fitted sheet and padded sheet????? Than they will not know that it is there and I will be the only one that can turn it on. I figure I can turn it on the lowest setting right before they go to bed. And I can shut it off or back on during the night as I see fit. For sure gonna get some flannel sheets for everyone.
