Plus We had good sales on meat , and I bought 4 gallons of milk on monday ...
I am thinking - What if the Power stays off and ALL my Fresh food is ruined??

Still I was sick to think , " what if My Stocking up ways Backfire and I lose all this food. ??"
I was thinking of all you guys , and wondering if You ever had a Lengthy power outage and Lost alot food??

We were without power for 3 days in mid-December and many others in our town were without power for 7 days. We were lucky and knew some people that had electricity so we took our food over to their house. We didn't lose much, but it does make a person appreciate modern conveniences!

Last Summer (the hottest week of the summer also) we lost power for five days. And the day before me and my SIL had just gone food shopping (MAJOR FOOD SHOPPING-MONTHLY). And it was all thrown away. I was so upset, but there was nothing I could do. I was afraid to go grocery shopping afterwards because ST. LOUIS was hit bad, and that means the grocery stores were. I wasn't trusting there food for a lil while. And peanut butter sandwiches and perishables were very tasty (NOT) that week. Then in winter we lost power again. I was so mad, So now I don't stock up as much.

You Are right I am thinking that it is probably not such a good Idea to Stock up on Perishables -
I mean We would Have lost 100's of dollars today
Our stores have generators ,
Let them store the food , and I am gonna only buy what can be used up quickly if I Need to use it quick I can go Back and Buy more!!

We lost everything in the fridge, freezer and extra freezer we have in the basement a few weeks ago when we lost power for over 30 hours. Luckily it wasn't as stocked as it has been in the past so we only lost around $100 worth of food. It was getting to the point we were more concerned about where to sleep another night or freezing pipes. Our home got down to 52 degrees. A friend lost power for days and her house got down to 38 degrees. Make sure you have a stockpile of flashlights and batteries that work. We also got tired of eating cold food so we did go and find restaurants that did have power.
The hardest part of the power outage was dealing with my dh who was going crazy without tv, computer, or Guitar Hero. The girls and I read books, played board games, played Uno, colored, played with play dough and Moon Sand, painted nails, and played Hide-and-go seek dark style.

I've dealt with power outtages for several days before. If it's winter time, it's no big deal because you can put the stuff outside......frozen stuff can be packed in the snow. We did have a tornado once that took power out for a few days and I selectively went through the frozen meat, stuck it in a cooler and packed dry ice on top although this can get pricey- dry ice isn't that cheap! But it worked out it was cheaper to do that then toss all the meat and replace it.

After Hurricane Ivan (sept 2004) we were without
power at home for 3 1/2 weeks! Without water for
the first whole week. And yes, it's still quite hot
in Sept down here!!
We were like Little House on the Prarie!!
When we did get water, we put jugs of it on the
porch to warm a little so that we could have a
makeshift shower.
Lots of volunteer groups from all over the country came
to help us a LOT!! We really appreciated it!
The day the hurricane hit, I was at a weeklong work function at the
state police academy which is an old (raggedy) air force base.
No showers, no food, no water, no electricity, permanantly locked
windows, so no air flow.
And they opened up the dorms to the public which was unsafe for us.
The Red Cross refused to give us evacuee status which meant no food.
The job refused to let us go home. Luckily the Salvation Army came
in and gave us a meal late that night.
It was a horrible experience!!
We laugh now, but it was no joke then!!

Our first winter in SD we got hit with a heck of a snow storm. It broke power lines because the snow was so heavy and wet. We were without power for three days, every other part of town got their power back on right away. First day wasnt too bad. It happened late in the afternoon, so we went out and had dinner, came home and went to bed. The next two days were long. It was cold and no power means nothing to do; tv, xbox, nothing!! But we were newlyweds, so we did manage to find ways to stay warm. I know that I would have never made it way back when before they had power or running water.

living in miami we have dealt with this quite a few times. it is really heart breaking when you have just gone shopping but on the plus side we always eat really well during those power outages. we have huge barbeques and "hurricane parties" it's fun and makes light of the situation. plus the food doesn't really go bad because we cook it all right away and share with family and friends. i also don't really stock up too much on perishables. i have maybe 2 weeks worth of meat in the fridge at a time. Milk is the real heartbreaker since the kids and i drink alot of it.

One year ago today, we lost power for 30 hours, due to an ice storm. I was 9 months pregnant, with a 16-month-old. We didn't lose any food, thankfully, we did stick some stuff outside.
I remember praying that I would go into labor so we could go to the hospital, where there was a generator and electricity, lol. We now own our own generator.
