Here the thing. My dh has just found an interest in hunting. He is planning on getting a muzzleloader and going deer hunting next year. Now I have no problem with that. To feed your family I think it's a good thing, very primal. I was raised by very southern grandparents. They gardened and grandpa would hunt. But, they did this as a way of life to keep food on the table and do what they knew how. Even now that they are retired and moved back south, they still grow a garden and buy whole cows to slaughter and can and freeze to fill 3 freezers. He also has honey bees. But, back to the point. Dh has mentioned having the deer heads hanging on the wall down in the basement once he makes a kill. I have a little problem with that right now. I think it's just not right. I mean it seems a little wrong to display dead animal parts around the house. I mean let it finally rest in peace. Dh is very upset I feel this way, he says it is a memory of your first or your sons first one and so on. So you can look at it and reminace. I say take a picture. i wouldn't go and hang up family member heads to remember them after they pass away,. I may change my opinion. But, What do you all think?

I grew up with a father that did this so I am used to it, but do think that it is gross. But in my own home I refuse to let my dh hang anything on the wall. That is what the garage is for ! It sounds like he may be willing to compromise by putting it downstairs. Maybe when the time comes he will think twice about it and not want to. I know that it is hard. But men for some reason seem to think that they have to show off there killings! ugh

Dead animals in the house = bad chi...

OK...it's not something I would do...ick.

There's a restaurant here that has animals heads on the wall. DS was so upset about how the animals were "stuck" there. He asked the waiter what was behind a wall where a deer was. The waiter replied the kitchen was. DS wanted to know if the rest of the deer was in the kitchen. Now that he's older, of course he knows the truth, but that place disturbs him.

My husband hunts too, but in the 10 years I have known him he has never killed anything. I personally think heads on the walls is weird, but I would let him hang one in the basement because I rarely go down there. If we used it for a family room or playroom there is no way in H@$$ they would be in the basement, they would be in the garage.

I've no problem with hunting, and I get the idea of the deer head, but to me it's something that you might see in a bar, or in a sportsman's club, etc. My brother mounted just the antlers & he has several of those hanging in the garage. Perhaps just mounting the antlers could be a compromise? Also, many times the head is not fit for mounting - it was damaged in the kill, etc., or is otherwise unattractive. It just doesn't fit with my decor, so it would be a "No" or at least a "put it in the garage" item.

A lot of people do actually do it in the area that I live - though I think it is growing "out of fashion". Thank goodness my husband doesn't hunt! But I wouldn't worry about it too much. Kids grow up with them actually think it is pretty normal and truthfully the odds of him getting a head worth mounting year after year is pretty slim. So if he plans on putting it in the basement I'd be OK -- in fact right now my basement has several movie posters in it!
