I'm not sure where to post this but I'm looking for advice, my dd who is 18 has been waitressing at this resort for over a year but the business seems to be having some trouble lately so some of her friends and herself started working some additonal hours waitressing at the American Legion, she has been there for almost 2 months and her manager has been telling alot of people he believes my dd maybe stealing as the register was short a couple of times on her shift and he was going to fire her, he did not discuss this with her, nor did he fire her and she found out about this from the chef's at her resort job, so she asked some of her friends if they had heard of anything like that and they had but knew it was not true & dismissed it so upset she called her manager at the Legion and asked & he pretty much stated there was an issue with her register on a couple of days but found out it was not her & told her that if he thought it was a problem he would have talked to her and he also told her not to be so upset as she did not get fired did she? She is devastated and completely embarrased as figured this must be the reason some of the customers were being pretty rude to her. My problem is can they get away with this? Shouldnt someone be accountable for hurting her reputation? I know her manager has a boss but it's complicated as it is the American Legion which is based on members & other issue's. Somehow I feel we cannot just drop this!! As her employer, don't they have an obligation to discuss this with her before telling everyone in the county???
I'm so frustrated, she is so hurt and feels she cannot go back to work there, which I can not blame her but I fear if she quits the manager will try to cover his own butt and blame her again.
Help!! I could just use some good advice on where to go with this.
Thank You

I really don't have any advice but I just wanted to give you some support. What an immature thing of that manger to do and I hope there is something that you can do. Good Luck

I personally would not want to work anywhere I was accused of being a thief, and I would not want my dd to. I would advise her to look for another job and quit.

I think he should be fired. But if she goes above his head and does this (which is the way to do it), and they don't follow through, she needs to be prepared to quit. What a creep!

ITA!

I would be encouraging her to find employment elsewhere!

Unfortunately that kind of backstabbing crap goes on in alot of work places. I agree with everyone else, the best revenge for your dd is to quit and find a different job.

Thank You for all of the help!! She is quitting, which is good but she believes not so good because she made some good tips there and actually liked it but better to move on and feel comfortable. I find it funny that she has not talked to anyone there since she talked to her manager on the phone and I think they believe she is just going to show up on Thursday but more than that she has a key to the place because they are always asking her to stay later so she can do extra's which she always was willing...funny they could tell everyone their belief on her stealing but still let her have a key. It's their loss.

Is she making it clear she's not quitting out of guilt? Sounds like the mgr. isn't going to fix the gossip he started.

She will be making that clear but not to her manager but to the board members of this legion. She is going in tommorow when the board members meet, the manager of the bar usually is not present at these meetings but she feels even if he is there is does not matter, too many of the other employess heard him say the things he did & are more than willing to talk to whom ever they need to. Poor thing, she is being pretty brave and very smart on how to handle this.

I worked in a restaurant for 8 years and now work in the headquarters for that restaurant and I know that is not fair. That manager is not allowed to discuss that type of situation with anyone else besides that employee and any other managers dealing with how to handle the situation.

In each of the restaurants that I work for, we have a sign up in the back with an Employee hotline where they can go and anonymously report any type of situation. I believe that your daughter should contact someone higher up - whether it's through an anonymous hotline or straight out to a regional manager of some sort. She should not have her reputation damaged because the manager thought she might be the one stealing because she happened to be one of the employees working on the nights the register was short.

Let her know that even if she does decide to quit and get another job that she has experience and employers like that. She should be able to get another waitressing job in no time. Remind her that when she is applying to turn her application in directly to a manager and not one of the young hosts at the front of the store. It is always better to personally turn it in so they can put a friendly face to the application. HTH
