I have a confession. Even after watching countless stories on the dangers of not vacuuming out your lint trap, I have never done more than clear the lint off the screen. Actually one time I id stick a piece of the vacuum in the hole for a minute (the long rectangle piece that I never use and don’t really know what it is supposed to be used for). Anyway, while I was cleaning out the basement over the weekend I came across a long, narrow tube for the vacuum. For some reason while I was vacuuming the laundry room I decided to vacuum the lint trap, with this piece. It was LOADED with lint and I clean the lint after every use. I was so surprised. When my DH gets home I am going to have him pull it from the wall and I am going to vacuum the “tunnel” inside the dryer and the one leading outside.

When is the last time you pulled your dryer out from the wall and gave it a good vacuum? Am I the only one who has heard of the danger of lint, but not vacuumed the vents?

I never vacuumed it THats a new one.. I can try that.. I actually take mine out and clean it after every load. One time a week I take it out, clean it and wash it with hot soap and water and scrub it..

Dateline used to do them, 20/20, some of the morning news shows. Honestly it was finding the vacuum attachment that jogged my memory. But, I am not talking about vacuuming the screen it is the opening the screen goes into. Take the screen out and hold a flash light over the opening to light the inside. You will be amazed at how much lint is in the hole. My understanding is lint is what causes dryer fires.

You can get one of those brushes to clean it out...my MIL has one, it looks like this:

Carol Wright Gifts: Cleaning Essentials: Lint-B-Gone&#153 Dryer Brushes

Clothes Dryer Hose Brush by Fuller Brush Company

Then there is also this type:

I have to admit I never cleaned it out at our old house. Here at our new house we got a new dryer, new hose etc That was less than a year ago - I should peer in there and take a look.

Thanks! Something else to keep me up at night!

LOL (kidding)

My brother and I used to fight over who got to clean out the dryer. We'd take the back off of it and clean out the tube. I think over the years we probably found about $200 in ones and twenties in that thing. Our dad would often forget cash in his pants pockets and sometimes it would end up in the lint tube. Mom would let us keep any money that we found while we were cleaning it. That bought us a lot of Garbage Pail Kids cards.

That is AWESOME! Now I really want to clean mine!

I always clean the screen off when I use the dryer. I did learn one thing though - do not pull the screen out while the dryer is running. It sucked the lint off before I got the screen out, and shot it out the duct outside the house. DH was outside when it happened, and wondered what was going on! Apparently our duct isn't clogged or anything!
