Some of you may know I started a thread last wk about sharing good news, and the fear that sometimes it can be perceived as bragging or thinking you're better than someone etc. Well that got everyone speculating on what my good news was, and actually they may be disappointed now by how it's not "that" big.
Some background to explain for those of you who don't know. For those of you who are "lifers" here...you can skip this part. My dd is a senior in HS and was diagnosed with ADD in the 3rd grade. She was always known to be a very smart girl but she struggled in school until she was finally started on medication. Since then, I consider us one of the success stories of treated ADD and she's done well enough to be placed into the gifted program in later elem, and into honors classes in middle school, and then honors and AP in HS. She was found to have an exceptionally high IQ during the course of all her testing, but even though she did well, school was probably more of a struggle for her than some children as she'd still forget homework sometimes, or rush through or procrastinate others.
So the last year, we've been doing the "college search" thing. It was a mixed bag for us, as my dd's test scores (SAT) were very high, and she looked good on paper as far as extracurriculars and service work, but she just had an "okay" grade point average. So when we started looking at colleges we noticed that her test scores were over the minimum for almost every scholarship there was, but her grade point average was BELOW every minimum. Although we're a financially comfortable family, we certainly don't have an extra $20,000-$30,000 per year to fork over for college, and we didn't want her to end up with tons of debt to deal with at graduation, especially since she's already saying she plans to attend graduate school. So it's been a very stressful time for us looking at our options.
Also, some of you may remember that I talked about how she's been having some significant stress related symptoms that have really escalated to the point of us being concerned in the last 3 or 4 months.
Well the college acceptances have started coming in and are turning out better than we thought they would. She's been accepted to each one we've heard from so far, and two have already placed her in the honors program and two others have invited her to apply to their honors program (the other two we haven't heard from yet). Two of the private schools gave her academic scholarships, including one that was $11,000 per year for all four years, but given how high their tuition is, that still it high for us.
But then Indiana University (my alma mater

) gave her a scholarship last Monday that would completely cover her tuition. They also invited her to apply to the honors program which would come with more money, and invited her to apply to some sort of research thing where she would do research with the faculty as an undergrad. Of course she might not get that. But we were excited (hence the jumping and whooping) because now we know we have AT LEAST one college that we can afford and that she could graduate with no debt.
We haven't settled on IU yet. We're still waiting until we get the final package offers from everyone which don't come until mid March to April and we've been told she could be eligible for more, but at least we're looking so much better than we thought we would. We were so afraid her GPA would limit her choices.
So I hope you don't think I'm just bragging (which I guess I am to a certain extent), but I was so excited and felt I should be able to share this with the people I spend more waking hours with than anyone else. So I hope you can share my joy with me.
