We are having a yard sale tomorrow and my husband and I are disagreeing on the prices of the baby items. I have a ton of Carter clothes and several pieces from Target and JCP, which my husband wants to price at $1.00/a piece. These clothes are in good to excellent shape and I don't want to give them away.

What price would you suggest for a Eurorider that has only been used 10 or 15 times? Husband says 5.00, I say at least 15.00.

Do you think someone will pay Avent bottles small (4oz) and large (9 oz) at 2.00 or 3.00?

What do mom's do whom pump BM with thier systems afterwards? I have two Medela electric pump and thought about selling the carriers and the motors (which are in excellent shape--one is only 4 months old) and discard the shieds and tubing? If I were to sell them what is a reasonable price? I don't want to through the entire system in the trash if someone can use them and buy the remaining parts needed at Target.

Any assistance or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Colleen

We tried to do the yardsale thing last year and I will never attempt it again. We were like you, had lots of good quality, name brand (some very expensive) baby clothes, most only worn once or twice. I priced all the outfits at $2-$4 a piece and you would not believe the rude responses I got.

I had a grandmother pull up in her brand new Lexus at 8am and tried to toss me two quarters for FIVE outfits?!?! When I said no, the price on the clothes is the price I will take (why in the world would I bargin at 8am?) she got down right pissy. She kept saying, "I am offering you .50¢, I am offering you .50¢." I wanted to knock her right down my driveway. As much as I would love the extra cash, we now take everything to several different charities or list it on freecycle. You might want to try selling the clothes in lots on EBAY. You will probably make more $$$ that way. Good luck!!

Id hold off the good items and sell them on ebay or take them to a consignment store. Youll make a heck of a lot more selling them on ebay than a yard sale. People try to get things for practically nothing at yard sales.

Having just had a baby, I can tell you that I would not pay more than $1 for baby clothes at a garage sale, and that is if they were in excelent condition. Most of my nice outfits only cost $6 - $8 new off clearance racks. The stuff I bought used at a consignment shop was around $4 - $5 for stuff like Baby Gap jackets and jeans.

I just had a yard sale too, and I priced all my ds's clothes at 50 cents per piece. I did OK, but , the one thing you have to remember is that people that shop yard sale's are looking for a deal(my self included) I will say that I took all of the name brand/brand new looking stuff to my local consignment shop & am doing quite well with the sales of my items in there. I did try to sell bottle's and sippy cup's most of which were in very good shape and I only sold a few of them & I had them marked 25 cents each or 5 for a dollar. Your area might be different than mine, as far as how much people will spend, so you might be able to price things a bit higher than I did. If you can, maybe go out a check out a few yardsales and see how they price things. You can always lower your prices during your sale, if you see things aren't selling, or you can tell your customers that you are willing to negociate some of the prices with them if they look interested. Good Luck with your sale!! HTH

I wont pay more than a $1 for clothes at yard sales, Im going there to get a good deal, and like another poster replied at my local consignment shop outfits are no more than $5 alot of times and thats NWT. Around here clothes sell for 50 cents to a $1. As far as bottles and cups go I will only use new from a store. Good luck at your sale and I hope all goes well

sell your nice stuff on ebay or craigslist. and target, carters and jcp are not really considered "nice" now gymboree and boutique do well on ebay. I know it hurts you to think of how much you paid but garage salers are crazy in their prices most won't even pay 50 cents for one piece they want items 2-4 for a dollar. Good luck, hope your yard sale experience is better than any of mine have been!

I have to say that I too have held many a garage sale. After some disappointing ones I developed my garage sale philosophy. I applied my knowledge of to how I plan my garage sales.

First you can sell more based on how you display it. I know this sounds silly but garage salers are grazers. How many times do you look at the street and watch a car slow down and look and drive off. Make your garage sale the most appealing one they see today. Rarely is a serious garage saler just hitting one sale. YOU KNOW they has a list of all the sales in your area that day and plans to hit several (definitly pays to advertise). If you don't advertise they will only see yours if they happen to drive by. Thus decreasing your overall traffic. Put featured items closest to the drive. This is what retailers call an attention grabber. If it is a small item feature it on a table with a big sign. Spend a $1 on balloons to create fun atmosphere. Once hooked they will stop to come in to shop. Organize items as they would be found in a home. If they are out shopping for a set of plates and bowls, if they see other items it for their kitchen (ex placemats) that work together they will likely purchase as well. Post a sign saying that you are willing to negotiate. That way you price an item slightly above what you are willing to take for an item giving yourself negotiating room. They will feel they have gotten a good bargin and you will get what you want. Do not throw anything away. I have learned that even if broken people will pay you for parts. At my last sale I put a fan by the garbage cans at the street and one of my customers cut off the plug in part and took off the dial, came up and handed me a dollar. He said he had the same fan and needed those two parts which would of cost him $11 from the manufactuer. Always sign these items as broken and only for parts so that you don't have someone return for a refund. THEY KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE! Know your customer. Be friendly and make chit chat. Ask what brings them by. Never ask yes or no quetions. Be aware of who your customer is. If they are pushing a stroller or you see a car seat in the car let them know you have some really nice kids stuff. Place toys on the lowest to the ground table you have. I use two storage boxes with an large old interior door. While the adults look around this will encourage kids to play with toys that they will as parents to purchase for them later. I will agree that you don't usually get much for clothing. Be resonable. If something has been only worn a few times let them know. I usually find that people barter more for clothing than anything else. REMEMBER your pricing strategy. Do not let them negotiate you below what you are willing to take. If they are offering you a really low price in the early part of your sale offer to take their number or give them yours and tell them that if you are unable to sell it you will let them have it at that price. Not all people are ok with this. Some will just say forget it but some will take you up on it or may even offer a little more. Some people are just trying to see how much you will go down. If anyone is hostile to you like the lady mentioned above let her know that you are refusing her business and would like her to leave. Be nice but firm. She would not get away with that behavior at Wal Mart and she should not do this to you. I had a woman one insist on getting a item marked at $25 for $5 once on the first day of my sale. I firmly but nicely told her that I am sorry this is day one and I was unwilling to let it go for that. I said I knew that I could get $25 for it on e-bay and would not sell for $5. She got snippy and rude and I simply asked her to leave. You do not need the business of ANYONE who is rude. This is your home.

I know that this was way long and I apologize but it is some info I wish I had implemented with my first sale. My last 2 day sale and I made over $400 after advertising costs (paper, signage, etc...) Hope this helps and good luck.

Personally, I agree with your husband on the clothing. I would not pay more than $1 an outfit unless it were say Gap or something and then I wouldn't pay much more. Typically I can find baby clothes for anywhere from 25 cents to $1 at a garage sale. I am not sure about the other item you are selling as I am not familiar with it. The breast pumps you should absolutely try to sell. They are really good brands and someone who knows about them will pick them up. If you have info on where to purchase the tubing, let them know. I am sorry I can't help you with pricing here, as I don't know what they sell for new. I can tell you though that people shopping at yard sales are looking for rock bottom prices. If you cannot handle selling your items for that, perhaps you would be better off taking them to a consignment shop.
