Thankfully, it isn't the neighbors directly on either side of us. This neighbor is the neighbor next door to the next door neighbor.

Everyday when I walk to pick-up DD from the bus stop, she and the group of kids who walk with us talk about the older couple who live in that house. "Are they home?" "Is the old witch there?" "They are so mean!" I emphasize with DD that she isn't to say nasty things about people she doesn't even know. The last time we passed the house I said to the other kids, exasperated, "Do you have to talk about them EVERY day?" Apparently, these neighbors are best known for calling the police (yes, 9-1-1) because an 8-yr old boy had walked on their lawn. Their house is on a curve on the road and since we all have acreage, it is rather tempting to cut across their lawn a little bit to make the walk just a hair shorter. I never have, but I could see were a kid would or even where a kid would ride their bike across a fraction of their lawn.

I've had only one interaction with the neighbor. She came by to complain about my chickens making noise (hello, their chickens!) and she wanted me to keep them quieter. I thought this rather odd since, #1 - we're not the only family with chickens and #2 - they are the new neighbors who bought a house with acreage in a subdivision that allows livestock so what exactly did she expect? Anyway, I was nice about it and told her that as soon as I could figure out HOW to quiet down my chickens, I certainly would.

Well, this neighbor's house is set back a little bit from the road and they have two driveways. One driveway goes directly from the street to their garage. The other driveway is a half circle that goes in front of their house then meets the other driveway.

Here is the weird part: As I walked to the bus stop to pick-up DD, I noticed the neighbors had laid SPIKE STRIPS on their circular driveway.

You know, I understand if someone is bothering them and how they'd want to do something about it. However, I can also imagine a bunch of other ways to deal with it. Spike strips are just plain bizarre.

Wow, the spike strips thing is very odd. We had someone in our little town who put big commerically made signs at the end of his driveway because the UPS type delivery trucks would turn around in it - just reminds me of my Dad. He keeps saw horses across the end of his driveway to keep people out. Mind you the driveway is about as long as the length of a car. He's just a crabby old man.

My old neighbors next door used to tie their dog up to their garage and let him do his business in my front yard. And let him out in the back yard loose, where he did his business in my yard. My boys were toddlers then and one spring after the snow melted they came in from playing out back and their boots were covered with dog poop. Having talked politely to these neighbors MANY times, I got a shovel and went out back and shoveled up all the poop. Enough to fill a large shovel, btw. I then went to their front door with it. They apologized profusely, same ol' same ol'. On my way back to my house, I dumped all the dog poop at the bottom of their steps.

I wasn't proud of myself, but I had spoken to them many times and received many assurances from them that it wouldn't happen again.

Thank the Lord they moved the following summer.

Won't it be interesting when they call 911 about something stupid like a kid walking through their lawn and the cop drives over the spike strips. I wonder if they will get in trouble then? That will be a good day to be out in the lawn doing some yard work so you can hear them. I can only imagine one PO'ed cop with flat tires!
