My best friend lives in another state. Her husband just walked out on her yesterday and she isnt doing well, shes stuck and he took their only car. She has been suicidal in the past and Im really worried about her again, shes showing the same signs. She hasnt lived there long and knows no one. Her husbands family has apparently turned on her overnight. She has asked me to come out tonight or tomorrow to just be with her. I have hardly any money and either does she! What should I do? I checked airline tickets online and the cheapest one was $447!

The easiest way is if you know anyone who flies frequently to see if they can arrange a flight on their frequent flyer miles.

The next cheapest is to make sure you stay over a Saturday night, fly at an odd time (this Monday will be awful because of the holiday) and fly into a hub even if that means driving a long distance. Check airports around your destination. For instance, I know someone who lives near Atlanta who gets better deals by flying in and out of an airport in Alabama.

If you fly from LA to Charlotte, NC you can get there on United for $284 RT. Of course, you'll have to rent a car and drive from there so that might take up the balance of your budget (it is a 7 hour drive). But then again, you'll probably be renting a car anyway. That's about the best I can do.

I would try calling the airline and seeing if there is a special rate that they can give you. Give the situation and ask to talk to a supervisor. You would be surprised at what they can do. Unfortunately, I know from experience that grievance flights (I know this isn't really grievance) are still pretty pricey. But I would give that a try and see what they say.

Why would you do that? What do you explain? "My friend really needs me?"

I don't mean to make light of it, but isn't the Red Cross for support after things like flash floods, fires and natural disasters? It just wouldn't be appropriate IMO.

Do you know her family at all? Do they live near her? I'm sorry your friend is going thru this, and I can appreciate what you're trying to do. In such short notice, you just might not be able to find a much cheaper flight.
