Ughhhhh! Trials and Tribulations of living in a House!

This is the first year that we have been in a house and luckily we rent from my parents but with all of the snow that we have had the back yard is a huge mess. The water must be at least 6 inches if not more! I woke up this morning to get something out of the basement freezer and there was a stream of water running across the floor! All of my parents stuff is down there and some of ours. Now I have to spend the rest of the day trying to clean it up. Plus I have a million other things to do today! Just what I need! I knew all of this snow was going to be a pain!

What a mess! You poor thing. We had water in our basement last year. My husband used the shop vac to clean it up. He would suck it up and then dump the vac until it was empty. After he finished that, he put up fans in the basement to dry it out. I did the cleanup of the things that got wet.

So sorry, I know what you are going thru. Lat summer during a storm, the electricity went out and we didn't know it so our sump pump wasn't working and we had 3-4" of water in our basement and it covered over 3/4 of it. It was a mess, total loss of just about everything, it took us almost 2 weeks to get everything ripped out, cleaned up and dried. Thank goodness we had insurance to cover.

Oh Sonja ~ I am soo sorry. It's totally a pain in the butt I can imagine. We have learned to keep ALL the things off the basement floor in our house because it's the same way each spring. I was just down there yesterday making sure everything was off the floor since it was getting warmer.

I hope that nothing is ruined!

I'm afraid to look in our basement right now. It's a "Michigan Basement" - it's scary as all get out, and we don't keep anything there. It's just the furnace, water pump, and sump crock. It's so uneven you have to push the water to the crock, and DH does that. We do have two dehumidifiers going all the time in the battle against mold though. Someday we'll rip stuff up and put drain tiles in....

Sorry to hear that. It happened to us once in our old house, water was ankle deep, i spent all morning pushing the water towards the basement drain.
I'm scared of it happening here at this house (we've been here 4.5 years), hasn't happened yet, but with all this snow and last nights rain......ugh, i don't even want to think about it!

OH yeah...at our old house, we got water if there was heavy snow melt, or heavy rain. We didn't store anyting on the floor though, for that reason. Luckily ours would travel easily into the sump pump pit, so it was easy to clean up/dry out.

I feel your pain, we've been in our house for a year now. When we bought it, it stated that a 'little rain water' got into the basement. Well that little is not so little now and is coming in from a few different areas. It's a big PAIN! Eventually we have to dig down and get the foundation fixed from the outside I think. Come spring we're going to do a big clean up down there as I'm sure there's mold even tho we have a dehumidifier and then use a selent (sp) from the inside to battle it for now, till we can afford a full fix.
