Ha ha ha, I know, like we all have gold bars around the house and we've decided to sell them because we're tired of dusting them! But seriously, I saw a segment on one of the morning shows and it showed two ladies gathering up old gold jewelry and selling it. Gold is selling at a really high amount right now. I went through my jewelry box and found a lot of old necklaces with broken clasps or crimped chains, old charms I'll never wear again, etc. It came to about an ounce.

I was wondering if anyone has sold any gold and how did you do it. How did you find a reputable dealer?

Thanks!

My husband collects and sells coins. He uses ebay, goes to auctions and has a few guys around town he sells/buys from. He has some gold coins he is waiting for the price to go up a little bit more before he sells them. (They were his mom's and she is giving him 1/2 the money. She wanted to wait.)

I say KEEP IT! With oil going over $100 a barrel, and the US dollar spiraling down, gold is just going to keep going up

I know - you're probably right. I saw another segment tonight on NBC Nightly News. Now there are people who have gold parties. You bring your old gold stuff and the dealer at the party weighs it on the spot and cuts you a check. It showed a lady on there who got over $1300 for her stuff. It is just so tempting. However, it would be my luck that if gold is going for $1000 an ounce now, I would sell it and it would shoot up to $2000 an ounce!

We just sold some. My sil works for a place that buys jewelry and we sent it to them. We got around $750 for stuff that we haven't worn or even looked at in years and years.

Does anyone know how you can tell if something is real gold or not?

Real gold will be stamped 10K, 14K, 18K, or 21K, depending on what carat gold it is. I can also tell by the feel of it if it is a chain - it is smoother and warmer to the touch than gold-tone or gold-plate.

I would just take it to a reputable jewelry store and have them look at it. They wouldn't charge you anything just to take a look at it and tell you if it was real or not.

I've been thinking about it all week. Where would I sell it? Any jewelry store or would it have to be a specialty store?
