OK, well my husband and I have stuff we need to get rid of so I'm thinking about doing a yard sale when it's a little warmer. I was thinking about stuff I could put in the yard sale and remembered my laptop. We actually gave it to my FIL but, he hasn't been using it and my husband said his dad sounded pretty sure he was going to give it back to us (he has some vision but is legally blind and it's too hard on him).

Well if he does that... we have no use for it at all. I don't know if I'd put it in the yard sale because generlaly people are trying to find cheap stuff right? lol. But we have swap shop and I could post it in the newspaper.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out what price I could try to sell it for. It'd be the lap top and the case. I spent around $1000 on it, maybe a little more. My hsuband was thinking I could probably sell it for $200-$300. I bought it either at the end of 2005 or beginning of 2006. There's nothing wrong with it either. It works just fine.

I'd probably try to sell the laptop on craigslist. I think that you'd get a better response thru that than at a garage sale. Very few people go to a garage sale looking for a laptop. KWIM?

I live in a small, small town. Craigslist wouldn't do me much good. We don't have a section for our town, and any place near by is 2 hours or more, and I don't think anyone would be willing to drive out here for a laptop. Hence the SwapShop idea

I'd sell it on Craigslist and I'd look the model up to see it's current price and if it's still that much, try to sell it for $400. If the value has dropped (which is normally the case with computers) then of course lower your price.

Sorry I just noticed your post. You can offer to ship it if they don't want to drive out to pick it up though.

i just want to caution you that you might not get that high a price. with the flooded market of computers and the very cheap prices on them - and the fact that someone can get a fully loaded laptop for under 600 bucks now....

i would take the laptop to a computer repair place and get their opinion of what its worth. they're the only ones really that will buy a used laptop (for parts and stuff) because i think most people would be leary of spending that kind of money on something that is older (and 3 years for a laptop is very old)

i say this because i just went through it! i sold my 2006 laptop for 120 bucks. and i was lucky to get that price since the technology is always upgrading. good luck

Unfortunately I have to agree with this. We bought my laptop in October for $250. It is a Gateway and has tons and tons of memory, I'll never use it all. It came loaded too. Personally I'd keep your laptop for the kids to use (if applicable). I know it's depressing, but honestly I don't think computers are worth much even a few months after you've bought them, let alone years later. Sorry to be such a downer.

If you dont think that your kids could use it in the future, then Id try Craigslist also. See what others are going for so you know what you may be able to ask.

Even though the money would be nice, I personally would give it to a charity, a local school, or offer it on freecycle to a high school student that is getting ready to graduate and can not afford to buy a laptop. Even though it is older, it isn't that old. My daughter is still using her July 06 laptop in college. The technology for computers the last 3 years has stalled out a little bit. Computers in 08 are only slightly faster than computers in 06. The biggest difference is the size of the hard drives and the version of their windows OS. 06 computers usually have 20-60gb hard drive and Windows XP. 08s usually have 100-200 gb hard drives and Windows Vista. Do a system restore to take it to the original factory settings before you sell or give away. All that said, the most you would be looking at for a 2 yr old laptop would be $100-150.
