I was wondering if anyone knows how long pneumonia is catchy for? First couple of days on antibiotic, or until finished? My daughter was diagnosed on Friday, and this is her 4th day on antibiotics. She still is coughing occasionally. This week is Spring Break for us and she wants to have playdates with cousins/friends. I want to make sure we don't spread it to anyone and that the catchy phase is over. Does anyone have a child that has had this or someone that is knowledgeable with medical stuff to know? Thanks for any input.

Yes pneumonia is very catchy. I don't know how long after the antibiotics start that it's not catchy any more. For most things it's okay after the first 24 hours after antibiotics. Maybe this is the same. I hope someone else is more knowledgable. It seems that 4 days should be plenty sufficient. Make sure to do plenty of hand washing and sanitizing and have her cover her mouth when coughing.

Pneumonia: Is it contagious?

Generally pneumonia is not at all contagious. In fact I've cared for many people with pneumonia and never gotten it from them. The one time I got it came from weeks on end bout with some unknown allergen. The antibiotics are for the infection itself.

It depends on if it is Viral pneumonia (like the cold virus, it is contagious and has to run it's course) or Bacterial Pneumonia (caused by a bacteria and treatable with ABs).

yup! Not all pneumonia is catchy...but if it is the catchy kind, it's catchy for sure as long as there is a fever.

I got pneumonia alot as a kid and I almost alawys needed more than 1 round of antibiotics. If you are unsure call your doc. they will know and should have told you if it was viral or baterial.
