Another Walmart made its way to Fremont, CA! I now live close to 4 Walmarts!!!

2 in Fremont, 1 in Union City and another in Milpitas. All within 10-15 min apart!!!

They just pop up like weeds.

Thankfully I only live near one. THere's another on the other side of town but it's far enough away. They seem to be like cockroaches, you see one in the area and there are 50 more lingering in the area!

Makes me wonder if some day down the line, having so many stores will backfire on them. Guess we'll see.

I don't understand why they are doing this from a business point of view. Aren't they becoming their own competition. Or (yet another one of my evil conspiracy theories) are they trying to kill of all other small business in every town so that they will eventually become a monopoly and can charge whatever they want. With this whole getting rid of their layaway plan, they are trying to become their own bank with their own credit card company. I don't think it's good (but I never do...lol)

We just got a SUPER Walmart. Not really near me. But the one & only one I shop at. I have to drive 50 miles. Most everyone around here is excited except for our local small town business owners. My mom works at the grocery store (we have 2 in town) & she was sent home early more than once this week because it was soo slow. They figure it is because of the new Super Walmart opening.

Yeah, the multiply like mad little rabbits.

We've got a fight going on in our little enclave between Walmart and the residents. Walmart wants to build a neighborhood Walmart, and they are just not welcome. Personally, if they're going to put one in, I'd rather see the regular one. My personal problem is that they just don't keep their stores up and let them get run down and dirty. The one in Tempe allows old junk cars in their lot for some reason. I don't know why they're there or why they're not towed out. In addition, I guess they allow overnight parking for RVers, which some don't want here. We have a security storage place where you can PAY to park them, which someone like my dad would never do, and our HOA will not allow overnight parking on the streets. We live away from the highway, so I don't think people would drive over here to use the lot, when there's another Walmart closer to the highway. I just wish they'd hire better people, train them better and pay them better so the customer service could be better. Their staff rarely smile and simply don't give a hoot about customers.

I really find them to be scary. I don't mean the individual stores but more how the whole Walmart chain is run, the theory behind it. They do try to give us the lowest prices, so naturally that is where we flock to. But it's gotten to the point that they are so big they are becoming like a big bully on the block.

First, the manufacturers of the products are in a no win situation. If they want their products out there where the people are, they have to get in bed with Walmart, but Walmart doesn't play fair with them. In order for the manufacturers to sell their products in that store they have to sell at almost a loss or find ways to make their product less expensive. There are a couple ways to do that. They can make a far lower quality product or they can find a cheaper work force to make them. I always use Levis and Vlasic as examples.

Levi was one of the last American made companies until the made a deal with Walmart. No one would buy their product at their usual price with a pair of jeans sitting right next to them for $12 that came from China. So Levi made a lower line. Less profit, layoffs, until they turned the lights off at their last American plant and moved it to Mexico.

The head of Walmart loved the idea of selling a gallon of pickles for under $3 so he made a deal with Vlasic to do it. It was not profitable for Vlasic but now they had a contract and were made to stick to it. The have gone bankrupt.

I know we are are hurting for money and have to struggle from paycheck to paycheck to make it. But I hope people will look at the big picture before it's too late. Walmart is like a big hungry feeding machine. When it moves into small towns, the smaller stores cannot compete, thus leaving empty main streets and unemployed people. When it is offering you the lowest prices, it's often true, but it costs more than you think. The manufacturers can't afford to sell a product for the same price that China and Mexico will sell them for. Their workers work for almost nothing. Therefore, there are more unemployed people and more empty buildings. When we are all unemployed, except for the Walmart workers who recieve minimum wage are rarely receive health insureance, where are we going to get the money to afford even their low prices?

There are many who are going to reply with we need to find jobs in areas other than manufacturing or Walmart is wonderful because I want my gallon of pickles for under $3. The fact is, America is changing. Some will adapt, but frankly, I don't know if there is enough room for all of us in this Walmart frame of mind. Most of our American made plants are gone. Our family farms are closing daily. They can't afford to offer you a gallon of pickles for less than $3. Even our non production jobs are leaving, so where are our workers supposed to go. It's a very bad cycle we are in and I am afraid to see where it's going to stop. I fear for our children in the future, what's going to be left for them? Somewhere down the line we will be on a level playing field with China and Mexico. They started on the ground and are working toward the top, we started on the top and are plumiting to the ground. Life's not going to be the same. Yes, I'm affraid of change.
