I have been meaning to ask this question for some time... nothing to do with the mansion thread...
We have an older house, one that we knew needs alot of work when we bought it. We did alot on the yard first off, and we just finally finished our girls room.
Sometimes it is so depressing not having an orderly HGTV house, and other times, like now it is so rewarding as we have a room complete. But, on to their bathroom now!

We do. My dad bought the old homeplace and gave it to me in 1995. Gradually, we've redone floors, upgraded plumbing, electrical, new roof, did an addition on the house. Without the addition, we'd be busting out the seams. This summer we're putting in new windows and putting my deck on the back of the house.
This house is very special to me. My grandparents built it in the early '50's. Still has the original windows and all here. My dad grew up here. Up in the attic, on a piece of drywall, my uncle used to write how many turkeys he killed in a season. It's still there. On the chimney brick in my dd1's room, there are some initials and the year 1954 carved into the mortar.

Sure do. But, this was my parent's house and where I grew up, so it's worth it. We're on year 10 of trying to fix it up, is pretty nice now but the garage still is in awful shape!

Nope. I grew up with that. No way. I knew our weakness - we are not handy in any way, and having grown up with the constant messes and unfinished projects, plus the expense of heating, rewiring and maintenance on an older home, we always agreed we'd want newer. To each his own.
I actually admire those that have the talent (and money) to have a vision and made something fabulous out of such homes. Love watching those shows on TV.

Yes, in fact that is how we've chosen the 2 homes that we've owned. Dh knows quite a bit of stuff from his farming background. So, knowing that dh and his dad could do a lot of the work we could build equity in our homes pretty quickly.
On our current home "we" (I mean dh ) have put in a whole new kitchen, torn down a divider wall, stripped wall paper in EVERY room, painted, redid bathrooms including tile floor, built shed, put in new flooring, painted exterior of house, put up drywall, painted and painted floors to make "finished" basement.
Our next projects are: put in deck/patio, put on new roof, put on siding and replace some windows..
The joys of home ownership!

yep... but the price was right.. and we're doing the work little by little. And like the other ladies said it's ours!! We pay less for the mortgage on it then what we were paying other people for rent.

We did...for more than 10 years. We really loved the house, but we got really tired of the constant maintenance, things going wrong, having to special order things etc There was always something that needed to be done. It's just the way it often is with older homes and ours was almost 100.
We moved about a year ago into a house that is about 20 years old. We love it.
