Weird, scary day. For a little background info, about a year ago on a local farm, they found a burned pickup truck with two bodies inside. If I recall correctly, they had been shot and then the perpetrator took their truck to a deserted road and set it on fire. They found the guys who did it (two were charged). Fast forward to today, the murder trial started in town. We live on the line between two counties. This is the smaller town in the county south of us where my kids go to school, we go to church, do some of our shopping, etc. It's so small that there are three traffic lights in the entire town, no Wal-Mart, the square is a 4-way stop, etc. So a murder trial is big stuff around here. Anyway, the day started out with bomb threats at all four of the schools, the courthouse and a factory. The suspects in the case apparently have a circle of friends that call themselves the "Kentucky Mafia"...and they are the ones who gave the threats. Needless to say the trial was cancelled for today and the whole town was freaked out. The schools will remain on lockdown until further notice which means nobody gets in without proper ID, all classrooms are locked, no recess outdoors and each class stays in their own room as much as possible...the classes even have the option of eating lunch in their room...it cuts down on the possibility of a large crowd being targeted in the cafeteria...and the no recess outdoors rule does the same.
The kids seem to be ok...I don't think they realize the seriousness of it. I was somewhat concerned, but not freaked out because the schools in the system have always been awesome about security.
