Well I'm kind of mad I guess, I've had different prescriptions in the last year, and always only had to pay $10 when I picked them up. I dropped one off today and when I picked it up it was $30! Is birth control just a lot more expensive or... what am I missing here??

I've had a lot of prescriptions filled recently, and it almost seems there is no rhyme or reason to any of it! We have what I believe is excellent insurance, but there's so many built-in gaps in coverage. One of my recent prescriptions cost us $1200 for 42 days because it is a "specialty drug" (chemo pill) that they pay much lower on. And, after the first prescription we have mail-order any refills. A couple of times the prescriptions got held up at the mail-order company and we had to have the prescription filled at the pharmacy. So, now of course, they don't want to pay anything on the prescriptions because we "didn't" mail-order them. Ugh! I don't know how older people or people who are too sick to keep up with it all can do it. It's nearly a part-time job!

Two things come to mind.

1-does your prescription plan cover birth control pills?
2-are the pills your doctor prescribed name brand rather than generic?

I haven't taken BCP in years, but I'm pretty sure I paid $30/month for mine at the time as well. Also, if what your doctor prescribed is name brand or a type that your prescription plan doesn't cover, that could explain the cost difference. Your plan should have a preferred drugs list - I would check and see if BCP are on there and if so which ones. If necessary, your doctor can change the prescription to one on the list. You can also call and ask the pharmacist if the pills were covered by your plan and if so, how much.

We take several prescription drugs that are $30 each month. Usually those are drugs that are newer and not generic yet. Once a drug is generic we only have to pay $10.

Our new insurance says that having a baby is cheaper than birth control. . I used to pay 10 bucks too but I now pay 50.

It's for the patch. And I honestly have no idea if our insurance covers BC. That's a good point.

It might not cover BC, which I think in today's age is total BS. It costs $10k-15k or more to have a baby, our insurance covers all but 10%, however, they won't cover the mini-pill, which is $28 a month. I don't know how much the patch is, but I'll be going on that after I am done pumping breastmilk - I suck at remembering my pills, I don't want to get pregnant, and I need the estrogen to keep on trying to improve my bone density. I might try and fight to have it covered as a medical necessity(bone density problems/severe osteopenia), have to talk to doc about it. According to some ins. and the woman appointed to control federal fund for BC to low income folks, "Fertility is not a disease".

Last I knew (two years ago LOL) the patch came with a little $5 coupon in the box of patches, and those are for folks who have ins. that doesn't cover BC. If they don't now, I'd contact the company and ask for a coupon for use if your ins doesn't cover. I'm also going to give Planned Parenthood a ring to see if I can get it cheaper through them.
