I know as Americans, we tend to be less fluent in other languages than many other developed countries. I took a bit of spanish in elementary school and then have just picked up some common nouns or phrases since it's so prevalent nowadays, but I would NOT be able to converse at all in spanish.

I also took German in HS and a little even in college, but again can't really do more than count, sing "Silent Night" (that's really helpful isn't it) or say a few basic phrases in German now....certainly not conversant.

So how about you?

The only language I am fluent in (other than english) is TYPO.

I did have 4 years of Spanish in high school, but I don't remember much at all.

Just English, unfortunately. I took French in high school and college. I pick through it when reading a French menu but I cannot translate quick enough if I am listening to it, nor can I get through it speaking.

Dh speaks Spanish fluently and I really wish that when we first got married, that I took a course so we could speak it in the home for the kids. I could still do that, of course, but it would have been a lot easier on the kids when they were small!

Now YOU were the one I was expecting to be fluent in another language. Does your DH speak spanish to the kids? Of course then they could all talk about you behind your back and you wouldn't know it

My French class I took in high school wasn't too terribly helpful considering my teachers an alcoholic who was gone on and off for the school year. We had a sub probally half the year. Also we sure did watch the hunchback of norte dame like 5 times. Thats ok though cause its my favorite disney movie. So there wasnt a whole lot of learning when the actual teacher was there. Learned more from the sub.

LOL! They would love that! Sometimes Dh just speaks in Spanish, truly to just annoy us all ... because we really have no clue. He cracks me up. He just keeps repeating and it's like a guessing game and we're all like "oh wait - he means PLATE! Plate! Quick...get the plate!". LOL

Dh and I his brothers and my MIL do speak in Spanish to each other...I love the sound of it.

In all our travels and living overseas...I was truly just the typical 'American', in that I only spoke English. I didn't have any problems though...because I would know in each language, whether it was German, Fench, Italian etc - to just say "I don't speak _____ - Do you Speak English". Folks were really kinda about it and so many people spoke English. I really think we do such a disservice to our children in the US by not focusing on second languages.

Spanish and English. I can read Italian too.
My grandpa knew 6 languages (including Japanese). I get confused with the 2 already.

I used to be pretty fluent in spanish - took 4 years in high school & more in college, but if you don't use it you lose it! I get by fine though when we are in Mexico - I can barter w/ the salespeople, get what I need at a pharmacy, ask for general information like what time things open or where things are. I took 3 years of Polish - gave it up last year - just too hard. I got pretty good at reading/writing, but the grammar was too hard for me to be conversational in it. And I kept translating from english to spanish to polish in my mind, and that just made it harder.
