DH had his sleep study several weeks ago as a follow up from being hospitalized for congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation at age 34. His doctors all felt that obstructive sleep apnea was a direct cause. Today we got back the results of his sleep study.

His doctor said that when he falls asleep, his oxygen levels drop to 60% and he stops breathing 23 times a minute. He also was not dreaming because he did not get to that level of sleep. He has very small nasal passages and there's no way to get enough oxygen into his airway. He will start Flonase next week to help open up his passages so oxygen can go deeper into his lungs.

He is now on CPAP every night and his O2 is up to 90%, but this is still not good enough. He is being referred to an ENT to discuss what else can be done. There has been talk of surgery but the success rate is very low and can make things worse. I'm hoping the Flonase will help him enough that he won't need surgery.

My brother sleeps with a CPAP (he's 32) and never travels without it. It has made a world of difference for him. I hope your DH notices a big difference, too. And, that the Flonase will do the trick for him. I know that will make you feel better, too!

Rene, did they say that his weight was a factor at all? As I mentioned before, this one med. I'm on has caused a 20lb weight gain and I was concerned it was a factor, but the Dr. didn't think so, as I had problems before kids when I was much slimmer.

I've used Flonase for allergies and it never helped. I so hope it helps him. (You already know different meds work on different people, and I don't think Flonase got to the root of my issues, is all).

Autismmom, could you also PM me info you sent Rene? I'm awaiting results from a sleep study and DH is having one done at the end of this month (he's actually gotten into car accidents due to this and is useless at night after work if he doesn't keep moving-he snores all night long).

The doctors have said all along that none of DH issues (heart or apnea) are weight based, however, the apnea is preventing him from losing weight! His doctor also said that it can take weeks of CPAP for him to start noticing a difference and to start losing weight.

My DH is only 34 and has had a CPAP machine for almost 3 yrs. The CPAP machine has changed his life, he is more active because he sleeps better. Good luck to your DH.
