I was thinking about getting one and cancelling service with what I have now.
I have no idea how they work. I know you have to buy service for it. But my question is - do you have to buy one every month? Or do you just buy them when your minutes are up??
Anyone have a pay as you go phone? How do you like it? Im tired of paying a monthly bill (for dh & I) when I dont hardly use the thing.

Are you talking about cell phones, pay as you go?

We have them through Cingular (AT&T) and it depends on how often you have to fill it....some are 30 days (to keep the service active) and others are longer, depends usually on the minutes you add. Our roll over and we have unlimited mobile to mobile ($1/day fee...but only on the days you use the phone). So if we only called each other it would only be $30 month per phone.

We also get bonus time for every $100 we spend. And I know Tracfone has a similar bonus you just have to look for codes (I used to find them online).

I would say really think about how much you are paying now compared....for some it's not worth it.

I have one through Virgin, and love it. I pay $15 every three months (automatically on the card - otherwise it would be $20 every 3 months). It comes out to about .17 or .18 per minute (don't have the phone in front of me) and is plenty for me. I only use it for an emergency contact (school nurse, etc.) and when I need to call somewhere when I'm not at home. The minutes carry over if they're not used in those 3 months.

I have a track phone and love it! I buy $20 worth of minutes(60 I think) every 90 days and the minutes roll over if you dont use them all. I paid $10 for the phone.

we bought one for my grandpa...

becareful of the expiration of the minutes.. If you don't use them all but don't buy more before the expiration you loose them..

So read the plan carefully is my advice

I have one and I just 'top it up' when ever I run out of credit. If I top up every month they give me some extra for free. I only spend about £5 (10$) a month!

I have a motorola phone with service thru cingular.

You can buy $15, $25, $50 or $100 cards. The $15 is good for 30 days and the $25 is good for 90 days and the others are good for 6 months.

As long as you renew the phone with new minutes before the time expires, the minutes roll over and you won't loose them.

I have had mine for over 5 years and only had to update once, because cingular updated their phones.

I really like mine, no plan to pay every month and worry about going over the minutes and getting hit with an unexpected high bill.

I have a virgin mobile that I used to use all the time. You just have to top it up every 90 days, the minimum is $15 if you do it online or $20 if you buy a card for it. Last year, I bought a $90 card off ebay and when I topped up, it was good for a whole year... so I haven't had to top up yet, not until November.

The minutes never expire if you don't use them, you just need to 'top up' every 90 days. It was a good phone, the only problem is I live in a rural county and it didn't get reception in alot of the places I am at, like work, on my way to work, at my mom's, where my dh used to live (we were there alot)...so it was just about useless as far as for emergency use, but I could use it where I live and immediate surrounding areas. I would've just kept it if I could get better reception, but without that, what's the point of carrying it?

I have a Verizon now that my dh bought me (we were dating). It works great and I get reception just about everywhere I go. There is a monthly bill though.
