for the older one - does he play any sports? He could wear his uniform and just go as a player. If he has a favorite team he could go as a sports fan and just wear everything head to toe from that team - even makeup his face in the appropriate colors. How about going as a chef - an apron and make a paper white hat, carry a spatula and your done. He could go as farmer - jeans or overalls, plaid shirt and straw hat.

For the younger one I was thinking maybe Hansel from Hansel & Gretal. Shorts and a nice shirt, make a funny shaped hat out of paper and add a few freckles. Maybe he could go as the boy from one of the books - If you give a mouse a cookie, moose a muffin, etc. and have a stuffed animal and a basket full of all the stuff from the book or tape it to the clothes.

Look around your house and through their toys to see what you have. Lots of times we've just worn stuff from the 'dress-up' stuff not a 'real' Halloween costume. Swords are easy to make with foil and can transform you into anything! Good luck.

I don't know if you can watch The View this morning but they are going to have homemade costumes with things from around the house.

The dollar store carried costumes.

Make your own costume...use a sheet so they can be ghosts, if you dont want to cut up your sheet go to a thrift store to get a sheet, there may be some costumes there too.
Do they have any camouflage clothes? just go buy some green, black & brown paints to paint their face like an army guy.
Have any touristy shirts? wear with sandals and shorts and put on a straw hat and put a map and camera on - be a tourist!
Nerds! wear button up shirts crooked, trousers with suspenders have shirt tucked in and pulled out so it looks sloppy, put pens in a pocket protector in the shirt pocket, get black nerdy glasses and put tape in the middle, part your sons hair down the middle with some gel. Put on a bow tie.

ok thats all i can think of.
