So last night we hear banging on our door at 2:30AM!!!!! We're so freaked out because nothing like that ever happens to us, so DH looks out the window and sees a police car!!! He answers the door and I hear a policman tell him they caught some kids breaking into our cars and we needed to come out to see what was missing.

Our neighborhood assoc. had sent out an email about a wk ago saying there had been car break ins recently and one of the neighbors noticed people breaking in cars and called the police. By the time they got here, they happened to be in my DH's SUV. The policeman said they caught 3 kids ...2 17-year olds, and one 16 year old. He said one of the kids got dog bit (I didn't think to ask him if it was a police dog or just neighborhood dog) and the other 2 kids just gave up. He said there "might" be a 4th kid but they weren't sure yet.

Luckily they were just kids looking for money. They did take whatever cash was in my purse, which wasn't much, but didn't bother with my cell phone in my car or anything else.

I was so freaked out I couldn't go back to sleep after that! We never have such excitement in our lives. Our community is VERY low crime so we were just stunned. I'm dying to find out if they're neighborhood kids or not.

So that was MY exciting night!!!! YIKES!!!

UPDATE: The police just stopped by our house and gave me $25! They said that was how much they recovered off the 3 boys and since I was the only one they knew for sure lost money, they gave it to me!! I asked him if it was neighborhood kids and he said one was and the others were spending the night. UGH....I hate knowing it's some kid from out neighborhood And there WAS a 4th kid. They are going to "visit" him in just a bit the policeman said. Wouldn't want to be THAT kid

Glad to hear that they caught the thieves, hopefully they will learn their lesson.

Oh my, you leave your purse in the car

Glad they were caught, we had our car broke into, but not "broke" as it wasn't locked but there was nothing in it to steal.

Goes to show you no matter where you live it CAN happen to you!

I'm glad someone else said it.

That would've scared me to death, too.

I guess you can be thankful there was no vandalism.

Yes, I've always left my purse in my car, but my car was always in our garage...until lately!! So it was in our driveway with my purse in it, and I'm not even sure it was locked!! We'd been making sure it's locked at night (but not during the day) but it doesn't look like the van was broken into, so we're assuming we must have forgotten to lock it last night!!

I think this is what's freaking me out. One of our relatives recently was telling us about all the thefts in vehicles around them, and I remember thinking to myself how we didn't have to worry about that. OOOPS!!!

I was thinking the same thing. They have had break in of cars in the local church and I was surprised at how many people leave their valuables in the car. I mention church because you think- who would have the guts to rob in a church.

Glad you were able to get your $ back- did they have to break the car windows?

No they didn't break the windows which is what makes us think we must have left them unlocked. My dh usually makes sure they're locked before he goes to bed but we were out of town yesterday and didn't get home until about 8PM and I think he just forgot. They were actually IN his car when the police pulled up and then the kids took off running. The only way we could really tell they'd been in my purse was that the wallet was out of my purse and there was no cash left.

We had the police banging on our door about that time one night (robbery across the street) and it was so scary! There's nothing like being awoken by banging and "police" being yelled at your door, dh and I practically fell out of bed.
We live in a safe area too where not much happens. Dh leaves his wallet in the glove box all the time and I never lock my car (nothing valuable), he really should bring it in and I should lock up.
Crime is up everywhere, by my parents there's been a string of armed robberies at restaurants, in a nice area too. They finally made a couple of arrests.
I'm glad they got some of the boys in your car, what little punks!
