I remember thinking the same thing when my son was in 2nd grade. The words seemed so hard. However, he learned them quite easily and it didn't seem to be a problem.

My daughter had words like that when she was in 2nd grade too! She struggled with spelling that whole year! She's in 4th grade now and the words are still hard. She does a lot better with her spelling now since she is grasping the concepts of some of the english language (i before e except after c, etc.).

I think they are pushing the kids a lot in the younger grades since there is studies out there saying the younger you are the more you are able to learn. I am not looking forward to when she comes home and I can't help her with her homework! She is only in 4th grade and she is learning about algebra and all sorts of stuff I learned in probably 7th grade- yikes! Well, it is scary but it will give me a chance to learn more by helping her.

I had words like that in 2nd grade. Funny, I remember in 2nd grade thru the year we had as spelling words all 50 states and my mom helped think up little things to help. For California, my mom told me to remember Surfin' USA where they say Californ-i-a. It helped because we used more phonetics then, they use more sight words now. I also had Sacajawea as a spelling word that year, not the easiest word, but I got it right on my spelling test. Isn't it amazing what you can remember from when you little, but can't always remember what you ate for lunch last week?

Actually, my 1st grader had most of these words a couple weeks ago when they were doing Geography. State of Michigan has upped their curriculum standards and my 1st grader is right now doing what my lder daughter did when she was in 2nd grade. As long as they are handling it, all is good. My 1st grader has 20 minutes of reading and 20 minutes of homework nightly, more on week-ends and my 3rd grader has 30 minutes of reading and 40-45 minutes of homework nightly. I dont EVER remember having homewrok in Elementary school unless it was a big project. I now have to worry abut my 3year old, because they do Kindergarten screening in Feb. of their 4year old, and they have to know 20 sight words and simple addition and phonics or they get recommended for D-K. She knows a few now, but thats alot of work for such a little one.

I think the spelling words on her list are about right fr a 2nd grader. my kids are in 4th grade now and I don't even know some of the words they have for spelling, which they must know how to spell and write the full definition. Mom's getting another education. Their class is also studying geology, which I took in college and they have learned more in one quarter than I learned in college. They also have to spell all of the geology words correctly and know those definitions as well. They are leatning a lot of things that I didn't learn until jr. high and high school. It's amazing.

Hi all-

This is my first post and I am glad to see others have the same concern for their 2nd graders spelling words. My son's spelling words today were:

Far start corn
farm born
hard floor
park warm
part cart
horse forest
more alarm

these seem easy to me but I did see some of the old posts and these seem fairly easy.
