Do these words seem to be a bit much for 2nd grade?
1. tornado
2. seasons
3. solid
4. liquid
5. gas
6. citizen
7. matter
8. flood
9. drought
10. thermometer
11. temperature
12. population
13. compass rose
14. map legend
Most of these words I remember doing in 4th or 5th grade. Maybe I'm just stressed because ds is not the best speller. Last week he had words like appreciate and condensation. If this is what they give kids in*2nd* grade then we are really in for some trouble in the upper grades.

When I look at my kids spelling words I think the same thing. Boy these are hard words. I think either I really don't remember or they are just getting harder. Sorry.

They don't seem that bad to me, but I don't have a 2nd grader, either. I remember my big accomplishment in 1st grade being "neighbor"

My second graders this week:
porch, care, dear, more, short, bare, tore, year, corn, shore, allowed, leaned, president, promise, rules, and whispered.
They are studying the are, ore, and ear for phonics. The harder words are vocabulary.
They get 10 phonics, 6 vocab each week.
She has gotten one A+ so far, last year she was always an A or A+ except for one test, she froze up and got a D!!!!!! Thank goodness her teacher did not write that on her test, she freaked the first time she got an A and not an A+.
I don't ever recall our words being os hard in elementary school!

I agree. We get a list of spelling words and a list of vocabulary words every week. The vocabulary words are always much harder!

Wow, and I thought my dd's spelling words were hard! Here's my 2nd grade dd's list for the week (these words are also used as vocabulary words):
cage, face, huge, page, tease, twice, until, enough, teachers' (yes, with the apostrophe), men's, call, full, heard, different, insect, and pumpkin.
This list is easier than normal, probably because the teacher has started giving out more spelling words to study. In the past, the lists (IMO) have been harder.
I didn't see words like those originally listed until I was much older. In fact, I didn't see many of my dd's words until 3rd or 4th grade. I thought I was doing good to know how to spell "vacation" in 3rd grade. So yes, I think your ds's spelling words are a bit much for 2nd grade.
It's amazing how much schools try to cram into kids nowadays.

Some of these are normal and a few seem like 3rd grade words, but that is good! You want to challenge and make him a better speller! My mom used to make me write out the words 20 times in a notebook, god I hated that! And I'm still a bad speller

sorry, but I do recall my dd getting these words in 2nd grade. the words look like they are coming out of the science curriculum, which weather is part of in second grade. for third grade my dd so far has had:
ludicrous, pedestrian, garrulous,
she also has to use the word in a sentence using correct spelling and punctuation.
