Oh wow, do I feel your pain!! I post on mommy savers because I WANT to be frugal, I want to save money, and learn how to make my money last. And I HATE how my dh will just take $20 out of the ATM anytime he feels like it, so he can get a slurpie or whatever. UM Hello?? And he has been out of work since the beginning of august! SO all he has had to do is sit around, do nothing, and buy slurpies! I counted up for the month of August, he took out $280 from the ATM! for what??? I hope someone has an answer cuz I certainly don't and he can't give me a good one!! And I'VE been the one slaving away at work, working 40hours PLUS and we STILL didn't make all our bills last month. Ugh.

Oh BELIEVE me, I took that ATM card away. And I hid all the money that he knew I had laying around. (just some loose cash) Thing is, it wasn't $280 all at one time, it was all in $20 increments!! He didn't believe me till I SHOWED him our acct online and there was a million transactions for $20 each!
He willing gave up the ATM card. LOL
And he went out tonight, to a concert that I FORBADE him to buy tickets for. His friend really wanted to go so HE bought the ticket and GAVE one to dh. ROFL. Then wanted to go out to eat, and dh said "I have NO money, wife said I'm cut off and won't give me any" So his friend offered to buy supper out too. Hehe! Hey he's single, no kids, he can afford it! LOL

Sometimes I clip certain coupons just INCASE the item goes on sale or something. But, my husband will see that I have a coupon for something and buy it just because I have the coupon! That totally defeats the purpose of saving money, because I believe if you buy something just because you have a coupon for it (not because you NEED it), that's a waste!

This is soooo my life - you make me laugh. I always try to explain to dh that just because you have a coupon does not mean it is the best deal in town! Then he brags that he saved X amount in coupons!! Great, but did you do the math and see that the store brand was cheaper even WITH the coupon?!! I do not save as much in coupons, but save more on the order overall by buying a mix of store and brand products with coupons - it all comes down to price per ounce!!!
And to the OP about balloons - my nemesis is the check-out candy! My kids know not to even think about asking mom for it!! If I do buy them a treat, it will be in the candy aisle where I can get 10 kit kats for a buck or something, where as at the check out kit kats will be 79 cents each or something!!! Guess where dad buys the candy?!! Drives me batty!! And the kids know how to play it too - dad is the softie, mom is the meanie!!! UGH - but I love the guy, it is just one of those "agree to disagree" moments!

You'd be further ahead to buy one of those helium machines and a box of balloons.
Our house is kinda reverse of the others. DH has been a saver all his life and I'm a recent frugal saver. He thinks I buy things just because I have a coupon (which I have to admit is true at times). He says I spend $50 to save $2 - which isn't true. I've done really good with coupons and he taked the umph out of me trying when he says stuff like that.

Isn't THAT the truth!! I don't know how much those helium tanks cost, but I bet if I added up how much we've spent in balloons over the past year ALONE I could've purchased one (or two) by now!!

You know, I've been guilty of using a coupon to purchase something that I don't usually buy too, but it always for a product that I've been wanting to try. I rarely go overboard though, and only use probably one or two of these coupons per month. Maybe less.

OMG, my DH does not see a dime of my yardsale money, consignment money or any extra money I might get.... I think I would wack him over the head if he took it since he does not lift a finger. He does get into my ebay money occasionally, but I do spend money out of the checkbook on me and the kids. I figure it even outs.

men and women think differently. i would chalk it up to him taking 6.00 out of his personal account to buy his daughter balloons.
for me, as long as it didn't take away from more needed items and utilities and food and the like, well...you only live once. enjoy life (and the balloons) while you can!
btw...if you have a dollar general or other dollar store around...they have mylar balloons for 99 cents each. and the really big mylar balloons are about 8.00 each...but they are HUGE! your dd would LOVE that thing, and it would last for days, i promise.

well, this depends. i am an avid couponer...and i often buy items that i have coupons for that i don't NEED....but the key is...AT THAT MOMENT! for instance...i brought 6 bottles of marinade at 69 cents a bottle. now..i never use marinade unless i'm making steak haha. and that's very rarely. the original price for the marinade was 3.00 each. so i brought them, thinking, "dang i'm not gonna use this stuff." BUT...just this week alone i've used 2 of them for our chicken dinner. so while i wasn't planning on using them when i brought them, i use them now.
my house is stockpiled high with tons of certain items. now of course, when i'm buying them at that rate, for that many, it seems like a waste. but when the sale is over, months later, i have that item handy, and don't have to worry about going out and buying it NOT on sale (which to me is like nails on a chalkboard).
this is why i buy only things that can be preserved for months in bulk like that. now if the item is free...i am getting as much as i possibly can, even if i NEVER use the item. for instance...BIC inkpens. i got 8 packages of them free. we never use inkpens here (because of dd writing on EVERYTHING)...but they were free! should i leave them in the store just because i don't use them? i don't THINK SO! haha...so the rules of trade for me:
if the item is free, get it, even if you don't use it ever.
if the item can be preserved, and you don't use it OFTEN, get it, and save it. one day you will use it, and thus save money by not having to buy it on a non sale price. this is especially worthy if the item is less than 70 cents on sale, and costs more than 2.50 originally.
if the item is something we use CONSTANTLY, buy alot of it on sale. because trust me, you will run through it!
these are tips that work for me. so while i may come home with say...7.00 worth of deodorant and toothpaste (which equals about 30 of them altogether), it may seem like a waste of money to buy that much deodorant and toothpaste. but now...i will NOT need to buy those things for at least another 8 - 9 months, EASILY...if that long from now. so the 7.00 in spending was well worth it.
so in my opinion, your husband has a point with buying what you have coupons for. because you can always save it...thus saving money in the FUTURE. one of the keys to couponing successfully (my opinion)...is not only shopping for today, but shopping for next month, too.
