1 c butter, softened
1 1/2 cups(sifted)powdered sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract
2 1/2 c all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
1/4 c sugar for decoration

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and confectioners' sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and stir in the vanilla and almond extract. Combine the flour, baking soda and cream of tartar; blend into the creamed mixture. Cover and chill overnight.

Preheat the oven to 375 .

Divide the dough into two parts. On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece of the dough out to 3/16 inch .
Cut with cookie cutters. Place cookies 1 1/2 inches apart onto greased cookie sheets.
Sprinkle cookies with plain or colored granulated sugar.(opt)

Bake for 8 minutes in the preheated oven, until lightly browned. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes then remove to a rack to cool completely.

I just finished up the mixture and put it into the fridge, but I have a question. Right now, it's about the consistency of frosting. It's hard to imagine that I'll be able to roll this out and cut with cutters. Does that sound right or am I worrying too much? It's my first time making sugar cookies and we're looking forward to using our Halloween cutters and decorations. TIA!

as long as you followed the directions...it should be fine....just make sure you let chill overnight....it tightens up alot while it chills!

It works best if you can keep the dough chilled in between batches too.
