I have to make brownies for my son's school and I thought I would be frugal and do it from scratch. But I don't have any recipes - can anyone help me out?

Look in any betty crocker cookbook or google a recipe. Didn't we just have a thread about cookbooks being obsolete as everyone is simply looking up recipes on line? Be prepared -you'll probably find a million and then won't be able to decide which one to make!

3/4 cup of cocoa
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
2/3 cup butter
1/2 cup boiling water
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
11/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Heat the oven to 350 and grease a 13x9x2 inch baking pan

In a large bowl, stir the cocoa and baking soda together. Stir in 1/3 cup butter, add the boiling water, and stir till the mixture thickens. Add the sugar, eggs, and remaining 1/3 cup of butter. Stir till smooth. Add the flour, vanilla, and salt and blend well. Stir in the chips and pour the mixture into the greased pan.

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the brownies begin to pull away from the sides of the pan.

I don't like nuts or whole chips in mine...it's a texture thing for me. This is my grandma's recipe that I use all the time. Sometimes I make brownies in muffin tins (with liners) - no mess, easy to split up for a class.

1/2 C Butter
4oz Baking Chocolate (unsweetened)
4 eggs (room temp)
1/2 tsp Salt
1 3/4 C Sugar
1 C All Purpose Flour (sifted)
1 C Pecans (optional)

Preheat oven to 350.

Melt the butter and chocolate in a double boiler (glass bowl over barely simmering water works just fine). Set aside to cool (if you don't let it cool down, it can make the brownies heavy and dry - JMO).

In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs and salt until well combined. Add the sugar gradually, beating well. Add the butter/chocolate mixture and mix in gently. Add the flour, stirring by hand, until combined.

Bake in 9 x 13 pan for about 25 minutes.

FYI - If you're adding nuts, dried fruits, chips to any recipe - lightly dusting them with flour keeps them from sinking to the bottom of any batter.

If you're looking online, I would suggest going to foodnetwork.com or epicurious.com - they have a great supply of recipes with reviews from folks that have tried them. I find the information invaluable.

Good luck!

Here is the one we use at our house...very yummy but it does have a ton of sugar (especially the frosting).

1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1 stick margarine
1 can hershey's syrup
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla

bake at 350* in a 13 x 9 pan for 30 minutes (or a toothpick comes out clean)

Frosting (if you choose)...

6 TBSP milk
6 TBSP Margarine
1 1/2 Cups Sugar
heat over med heat stirring constantly until boiling. Once boiling cook for 1 minute...
remove from heat and add
1/2 cup chocolate chips
Once chips completely melted - pour over brownies. Let cool (will be consistancy of fudge).

I just made brownies about 5 minutes ago. The recipe I use are not the absolute best, but they are good enough and easy.

2 cups white sugar
1 cup butter
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup nuts or chocolate chips

Melt the butter or margarine and mix all ingredients in the order given.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 to 30 minutes in a 9 x 13 inch greased pan.

Do you have enough ideas now? haha

Another thing I do with my brownie is that I dice up about 6 of the mini Snickers bars in my batter too. Gives it a big kick of flavor and some extra texture to it.

That is a GREAT idea. I am a sucker for brownies... they are my favorite dessert.... a warm brownie with some ice cream on top... UGH.... sooooo gooooood!

Ingredients
Makes 12 hearts
1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, plus more for cake pan
2 1/2 cups packed light-brown sugar
6 ounces unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
4 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
Confectioners' sugar, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, for coating bites
Directions
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9-by-13-inch cake pan. Cut a piece of waxed paper to fit the bottom, and press it onto buttered surface. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, and chocolate. Microwave on high for 1 minute; stir. If the chocolate is not softened, continue to microwave at 10-second intervals, removing before completely melted.
Beat the eggs and vanilla into the melted chocolate with a wooden spoon. Beat in the flour and salt. Pour into prepared pan, and smooth the top. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out almost clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool.
Run a knife around the edge of the pan. Turn the brownie cake out onto a baking sheet, and flip over onto a work surface. Cut out the brownies with a 2 1/2-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter. Dust with cocoa if you like. Form the scraps into 1-inch balls, and roll them in the coating of your choice.
