I read this book several months ago... it is to date one of my most favorite books. The vocabulary is so eloquent - Lionel Shriver has a beautiful style of writing. The book was a bout a teen who committed a massacre at his high schhol after having deep emotional and behavioral issues throughout his childhood. The story is written in the form of letters the mother has written to the father after the tragic event occurred. I found myself feeling sorry for her one page and furious at her on the next. The book raises many questions but the most prominent one in my mind was did the child turn out the way he did because his mother did not love him... or did his mother not love him because of the way he turned out? Once I started reading this book I could not put it down.
I read another novel of Lionel Shriver's called Double Fault, it was one of her earlier books. It was ok, a little disappointing in the style... not as eloquent. It took me quite a while to get into the story, the beginning was mostly about tennis which I know nothing about. I think her writing style has improved with each book.
I am looking forward to reading her latest novel The Post Birthday World. If anyone has read it or started it I would love a review. The plot sounds interesting.
