Per TV Guide:

Shane Wests pilot was NOT picked up for fall, he still does know if he will be on next year. He is hoping that that he can ride in for a couple of episodes. Especially if it's the FINAL season. Said he loved being on ER and is trying to stay in contact with everyone on the show so it doesnt have to be so sad in real life.

Oh wow. Can you imagine the storyline they are going to have to go with on that one?? I think it would be an awesome one, personally. Too much on tv is about "perfect". Let's put a little reality in there.

I absolutely agree! I'd keep tuning into ER even if Luca and Abby left, if he remained on it...no doubt about it, and it would make a great story line!
