I thought this would be a good topic of discussion.The mail clerk at work yesterday asked me what i thought of the book "Memoirs of a Geisha" since she knows i'm a big reader,she is too, we always talk about our latest good reads. I told her i honestly just could not get into that book,maybe it was my mood at the time,not sure, but i got close to half way thru it and just stopped reading it. She asked if i watched the movie.....i said "No, but i might give the movie a try and then go back and read the book again".
She said " i just cannot read the book after i have seen the movie, it just ruins the book for me", i laughed and said "It's okay, lots of people are like that". I must be the opposite though because i am the type that if i have seen the movie,then im totally curious about the book and want to read it to see the differences, because the book is usually better than the movie right?
Examples;
The Horse Whisperer, i thought the book was soooooooooo much better!
Devine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sister hood, watched the movie first, got curious and read the book and loved it.
GRRR, i will think of more later.........kids are whining for the use of the phone now and i'm on dial-up

I usually find the books to be much better, they are more descriptive and It's almost as if I can picture it in my mind. If I have seen a movie based on a book first then I try and read the book afterwards (and if I liked the movie then I usually LOVE the book) I have never had a book ruined for me...If anything I appreciate the book, again b/c they are so much more descriptive and can include things (even other storylines) that the movie never touched on
Now there are LOTS of movies the PALE in comparisons to the books they were based on but that is a whole nother topic

I think "Message in a Bottle" and " The Bridges of Madison County" were the only movies that i liked MORE than the books.

I watched the movie of Memoir of a Geisha AFTER I read the book,and the book was a lot, lot better. The movie cut out a lot, but if you read the book first then you can fill in what they left out.
I prefer to read the book first then the movie, other wise I have the actor/acctress in my head

I read the Memoirs of a Geisha before seeing the movie - it helped me understand the movie a lot more. I generally do read it before I see it whenever possible.

In most cases I think the book is better than the movie. I guess its the details in the book that tend to be left out in the films.
The Nanny Diaries was a sad but really good read, yet I have seen ads for the movie and they make it to be a comedy which imo it was not.
Don't make fun of me but years ago I saw Forest Gump and I decided to read the book. I hated the book. That so far has been the only case for me where the movie was better.

My son loves the movie "Forrest Gump". He's 15 yrs old so i assumed he was wise-@ss when he was talking about loving that movie. lol, he got the DVD for Christmas, so if he was being a wise-@ss the joke was on him!

I like to read the book first. Every once in awhile I'll watch a movie and see it was based on a book and then I'll read it.
