The other day I was out shopping for something locally made to send to my SS and stumbled upon a shop I have passed hundreds if not thousands of times. I assumed it was a restaurant that specialized in soup - it was called Stone Soup. I knew they served awesome soup but had no idea they are a co-op selling produce, baked good, canned goods, art, used music and movies, used baby clothes and toys and hosted many workshops, seminars and demo's. Everything in the store is locally made/produced.
The cool thing was right inside the door - there was a bookshelf full of books, mostly fiction. The sign said "free books" Too good to be true right? I found a book that was on my 4 page list of books I want to read - Night by Elie Wiesel. I asked the lady at the register what the catch was... she said none - all we ask is that you go online to the website on the sticker in the front cover and register the book.
The website is BookCrossing - The World's Biggest Free Book Club - Catch and Release Used Books it is an online tracking site of books that are given away. You can follow a book that you have put into the sytem as it travels around the area.. your state... the USA... or the world. You may leave a small journal entry about the book if you choose. There are currently over 15,000 books in the system just in the USA. You can see where these free books are available on the site. You are not required to leave one but the polite thing to do would either leave one or bring one back (if not the same one.)
I think this is a wonderful concept - sharing books. I do it as much as I can afford to.
