Has anyone seen this? The one with John Travolta. My mom got it for Ashlynn for Christmas without watching it before she bought it. We figured that with John Travolta and Zach Efron (High School Musical) that it would be a good movie. Well my mom watched it last night and was definately NOT impressed! She said that the movie was all about segregation and that they said alot of the "N" word.

Anyone seen it?

What is your opinion on it?

I am definately not letting her watch it. I guess it will go in our movie library vault until they are older.

I admit I liked it, but I knew it what it was about. My 6 yr old was with me when I started it because I heard from many it was fine for kids anyway a little way though he informed me it was too adultish for him and went off to play legos

I liked it but felt the preview was misleading to the type of film that it was. The preview showed a be-bopy have fun dance show -- but in reality it had a bit more of a message. Maybe they expected more people to be familar with its Boardway days? I don't know. but I did feel the preview was misleading.

And my 4 year old loved it. Lots of singing and dancing.

My two teens & I saw it, and we loved it, but a musical type family. It does have one plot line about segregation, but it's done in a way that makes segregation look bad, so I'm not sure I thought that was a problem. I don't remember the "N" word, but it may have had it as it was set during an era when that word was used more.

Did anyone see the original with Ricki Lake? I have always loved that movie, and look forward to seeing the new one. I already knew what the movie was about, but still planned on screening it first before showing it to my kids. I don't know what things and words were changed.

my kids loved that movie!! they are 5 and 7!! tho one thing is my ooldest already knew about segration as she learned about Ruby Bridges! I think its imp for them to learn these things! She got the story line but like I said the topic had been discused with her!!in school and at home!! she is also fasiated with The Ruby Bridges Story and reads it oftem so to me this movies tied in with her learning how wrong segregation is!!

I love this movie! John Waters directed it (did he not write it as well)- I know this was out when I was in school- which grade I don't recall!

As for letting your kids watch it- it is up to you- my oldest enjoys it- as for the N word- I am not sure about the new version- but it is based in the 60's with segregation and so on- it is a somewhat good way to show the kids what happened in the not so distant past.

I loved the original and being that this was a "remake" yes, we knew what it was going to deal with and DD (she just turned 8 a week and a half ago) and I talked about it (It was actually a good opportunity to explain how things were different then and why we should treat everyone the same, etc...)

I took her to see it in the movies and bought it for her the day it came out on DVD. We all loved it. And Kels had a lot to say in her admiration of Tracy Turnblad seeing past color and who the person really is, and liked that Tracy stood up for what she believed was right. So I am extremly comfortable in my choice of allowing it.

The "N" word is not in this new version.. I checked out Focus on the Family's review of it.. they list all the different content in the movie - sexual, violent, positive & negative elements, bad language, spiritual, etc. Here's the link if you want to read it. Hairspray - Pluggedinonline review

DH and I watched this movie and loved it. I personally had no clue what it was really about. I thought it was about her wanting to be on a dance show; I didn't know about the segregation plot line. I agree the previews were misleading to those who didn't know anything of the real storyline.

I have not personally seen it but my mother watched it and definately said the "N" word is in it. Maybe I will have to watch it and see if it would be appropriate for her to watch it. It sounds like it is not as bad as what my mom mad it seem. But she is also from that era and sees things in a whole different perspective.
Thanks for the advice and opinions. It really helps a lot.
