Ever the optimist concerning the Spears family, Dr. Phil McGraw commends matriarch Lynne Spears – despite the current controversy regarding her 16-year old daughter's pregnancy.

"We know the Spears family, particularly the parents," he tells PEOPLE at Adrienne Maloof and Dr. 90210 Phil Nassif's holiday party in Beverly Hills on Saturday. "An asset that Britney and Jamie Lynn both have is a great and dedicated mother."

McGraw admits that his friend is "troubled right now" but is "really looking for the positives in this." As her daughters live under the glare of public scrutiny and criticism, Lynne has "her feet squarely and solidly on the ground," he says.

"They're a very strong, close-knit family," says Dr. Phil's wife Robin, "They're relying on each other." And with her book recently put on hold, Lynne is also drawing strength from her faith. "I talked to Lynne yesterday and she said they're turning to prayer, asked that I pray for them. That's how they're going to get through it."

IMO, because another posted and not 100% if its true but she is dedicated to getting more money for them if she really sold the story and rights to J.lynnes pregacy to OK magazine!

I have always thought Dr Phil is a bit unusual!

I'm not sticking up for Mama Spears because I don't know her. But even the best of parents can have messed up kids. Perhaps she hasn't made the smartest of choices but I'm sure she loves her children and has had the best intentions for them all.

Oh, I definitely have to agree with you. My oldest has had way more than her fair share of trouble (though I think she is on the right path now!) and I consider myself a great parent!

I still say Dr Phil is weird though

I defiantly trust what Dr. phil says -

I think he knows who is truly Good and who is truly Bad.

Most of Britney's problems happened in her twenties (in the last couple years). Are parents still responsible for decisions that their children make when they are this old? She is old enough to make her own decisions, and she has the money and ability to buy underwear, even if she can't remember to wear it . It's not like Drew's mom who had no clue her daughter was drinking and using cocaine before she was a teenager, or if she did know did nothing to stop it.
Maybe Jamie Lynn was using birth control (the only thing 100% effective is abstinence). Are you a bad mother if your child has premarital sex? How many ladies on this board waited until their wedding night? Are your moms bad mothers? Nope imo.

I haven't walked in her shoes, and I don't know enough about her to judge her mothering abilities.

I think alot of people are so quick to want to lay blame, I know alot of great parents who try hard and do the best they can and kids will still do wrong. I think people need to worry about their own homes and what is going on there. And another thing I have learned through the years be careful of judging someone else because your kids will probably do the same or worse!!!!!!
