She is really losing it. I hope she gets the help she needs and really straightens herself out as she is self destructing.

Britney Spears was hospitalized late Thursday night after the pop star locked herself in a room with one of her children at her L.A. home and refused to hand him over to ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Spears, who according to police appeared to be "under the influence of an unknown substance," was strapped to a gurney and rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Federline later showed up and custody of the children, Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1, was transferred to him.

A source close to Spears tells PEOPLE the pop star's court-appointed child monitor called police. "She had already put Preston in the car when Britney locked herself in a room with Jayden," says the source.

Spears, who has visitation rights with the kids, was scheduled to give the boys over to Federline at 7 p.m. Thursday. A bodyguard for Federline arrived to pick up the boys at the designated time, but Spears refused to relinquish her sons, according to a source.

According to police, officers responded around 8 p.m. to a call "about a custodial dispute regarding Britney Spears's children," says Los Angeles police Officer Jason Lee.

Nearly three hours later, police determined that a court order stated that the singer's children, who were with Spears at the time, were supposed to be with Kevin Federline, and a transfer was arranged, according to Lee.

"While officers were on the scene, they observed Ms. Spears under the influence of an unknown substance," Lee added.

In addition to multiple officers, fire trucks, two ambulances and a police helicopter were all on the scene. Spears was seen being taken to an ambulance on a gurney. (See video here.)

Britney's Father Arrives at Hospital
After Spears arrived at the hospital, her father, Jamie, and her ex, Federline – as well as both of her sons – were spotted there.

Police – as well as Federline's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan – arrived at the house close to 8 p.m., though Kaplan was later seen leaving.

Earlier in the day, Spears showed up 90 minutes late to a scheduled deposition in her custody case – and stayed for only a fraction of an hour.

Back at her Studio City home directly after the hearing, when a photographer asked if Kaplan was nice to her, Spears, 26, responded with an emphatic, "No!"

When reached by PEOPLE, Spears's lawyer Sorrell Trope, who on Wednesday filed a request to withdraw from the singer's custody case, said only: "No comment."

Who would have ever thought that K-Fed would end up being the more responsible and less controversial figure in this whole scenerio??
I don't know what is wrong with Brittney, but i hope she gets the help she needs and soon.

I don't feel sorry for her.

I wish I could slap her. For crying out loud, woman, you have two children to think about here! Her kids are about the same age as mine, all I can think of was what they must be thinking and feeling. You know, he may not even be scared because he is so used to this type of thing going on around him.

I don't understand how a mother, rich or poor, famous or not, can go through life NOT thinking of her children first. I don't pee without making sure my kids are safe. I just don't get it.

If she didn't have kids, I probably would feel sorry for her.

Well, quite honestly just because all women have ovaries and a uterus, doesn't mean all women have that maternal instinct. Just like all men have sperm, but it doesn't necessarily make them good father material either.

I know this. I have seen it in my own life with people around me. Just because a woman, who has children, doesn't seem to have an ounce of maternal instinct, does not excuse her behavior.

I guess I'm making this a little more personal than it has to be. I can't save every child who has horrible parents.

It is sad. I feel sorry for those kids. We do not get to pick our parents. What a life those 2 young boys have had and I know there are lots of other kids in situations that are like this and it is not played out in the media- Again- its the kids that I feel for. She needs to get whatever kind of help is needed!

I don't feel a bit sorry for her...life is about choices and responsiblity, and she has made some poor ones. I feel sorry for those 2 boys that have to put up with being shuffled between 2 people with cameras flashing in their faces, and a mother who can't stay sober for one visitation. I don't know about California laws, but here it takes 2 signatures to commit someone and she needs it. Gain sobriety and prove yourself worthy of being called a mother imo.
