Dr. Phil Dedicating Show to Britney - Britney Spears, Phil McGraw : People.com

Dr. Phil Dedicating Show to Britney
SATURDAY JANUARY 05, 2008 05:30 PM EST

Dr. Phil McGraw – who met Britney Spears at Cedars-Sinai hospital Saturday – will devote his Monday taping to the pop star's problems. The show will air Wednesday.

The syndicated talk-show host and therapist says he talked to Spears as she was leaving the facility, where she was held on a mental lockdown after a custody dispute. She was released after just a day and a half from a possible 72-hour stay.

In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, McGraw said: "My meeting with Britney and some family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention.

"She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car."

Still, a source tells PEOPLE that McGraw "talked to both Britney and [father] Jamie about how her being released was one of the worst decisions that could have been made." The source says they packed up within 10 minutes.

McGraw has a history of supporting the Spears family. In December, after the announcement of 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears's pregnancy, he told PEOPLE that "an asset that Britney and Jamie Lynn both have is a great and dedicated mother," Lynne Spears.

"They're a very strong, close-knit family," says Dr. Phil's wife Robin, "They're relying on each other."

Am I the only one that thinks if Dr. Phil really wanted to help her privately that would be great, but doing a show on her is just exploiting her further??? This makes me really question his judgment.

If that girl won't get help after all the available options she has, then it is almost worthless. Dr. Phil might as well make a show about it...........her life has always been in the spotlight anyhow, so nothing new to her! If anything, maybe, just maybe he can strike some chord in that head of hers.

Brit needs to move away from the spotlight and take a looooong-looooong vacation to no where.

I think it's exploitation. Have you seen his shows lately? They seem trashy now. I liked it when it first came out but now it's kinda going into a Maury direction. I give him 5 more years and he'll be doing paternity testing...

That's just what Britney needs -- more publicity.

IMO, he's just doing this for ratings.

Yeah..my first thought when I saw the article this morning was: wait...she already has so many people betraying her. This guy goes in under the guise of helping and then uses it for his own self-promotion - any way you look at it. I was hoping he'd prove me wrong, but obviously not. He should be ashamed of himself.

He is a professional -- he should know better than this.

On the radio this morning it sounded like it was Britney's parents that contacted Dr. Phil to do a public intervention. All I can say is SHAME ON LYNNE SPEARS! I am all for doing an intervention with Brit, but I agree that keeping her in the public spotlight is the last thing this poor girls needs right now. I hope she can get the help she needs and the support of her parents, but sadly I think they're going about it all the wrong way.

I read a thing online (but of course who knows if it's true) that there were NO drugs or alcohol in her blood test, which does make it seem as if it's some psychiatric disorder such as bipolar. Shame on all of them for splashing this in the public and not dealing with it privately. UGH...they all make me sick.
