I was listening to a radio show yesterday morning where the topic was Britney Spears and her diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. There were a lot of callers that said she was really just a product of her own bad decisions, and probably not bipolar. On the other hand, having Bipolar could cause the bad decisions to begin with. Does anyone have an opinion on this? What do you think?

Admittedly, I know NOTHING about Bipolar disorder, but this was a girl that had it all together (or seemed to) up until a few years ago. I personally think she is a product of her own bad decisions.
Is being Bipolar something that can just come on, or perhaps have been brought on post partum (Perhaps she had PPD and it got very out of hand, 2 pregnancies virtually back to back and all the stress right after her second son was born (divorce, a comeback, etc)...I'd be stressed as all heck!).

Who knows.

I think untreated the bipolar could make you make bad decisions.

Yah I agree with that, bipolar can help you make bad descions.

My dh is a mild bipolar, like on the most mild point on the spectrum. But until we got him diagnosed, all he did was make bad desions. Not as bad as Brit, but he was constantly spending money, drinking, and doing stuff he KNEW would upset me. And then he couldn't tell me WHY he did stuff like that. Now that he is aware that he has the disorder, he will try to go out of his way to avoid getting into situations that get him into trouble.

My niece is bipolar and when she is off meds, it's pretty bad. But she was ALWAYS bad - since toddler years - it was obvious there was something wrong. I've long suspected post-partum depression w/ Britney. I think she had it after the first baby, and things started going bad for her marriage, and then the 2nd baby/hormones out of whack/ and I don't think it was treated. From there - who knows where her mental state is.

I don't think any of us can make that call. Why? Because, as much as we THINK we know her, we do not!!!! Just because she is in the spotlight does not mean we see her real self or how she really acts. We see what the media wants us to see. (I am not saying she is making great decisions or anything, we just don't see EVERYTHING.)

So, do I think she is bipolar? Possibly, but I can't make that call since I have never me the girl!!!! I don't think any of us can. We are not armchair psychiatrists watching it through a TV or computer nor should we be. JMO

I agree that we don't "know" her but many of us know bipolar people and the actions seem similar. It's just opinions.

Claire, your comments are interesting, because on CNN, they had all kinds of "experts" there diagnosing her and labeling her. I ended up switching from there, as they were arguing about someone they had never treated, and it was just so ridiculous.

She certainly does, however, show depression one minute and delusions of grandeur the next. For all we know, she could be schizophrenic - she changes voices, according to her ex-bodyguard. Either way, she's in real trouble. If you are going to parade around in your hotel bottomless, won't you close the blinds, and not sit on the balcony?

Oh I'm sorry, I thought she WAS already diagnosed as a Bipolar. Not that the media had already diagnosed her.

I do know about bipolar and truely believe she shows strong signs. Often bipolar shows up at around 17-21 years of age. Lack of stability only makes it worse. Her quickie marriage to the guy from high school was one of the first signs. Hormones from pregnancy and birth contribute as well. I don't understand how someone who has attacked a car with an umbrella, run over peoples feet, and hit cars can't get committed after a standoff with police. I really wish someone would commit her for a few months to a mental institution. I think mood stabilizers would help tremendosly.
