I have 2 big boxes of powdered dishwasher detergent. One is Electrasol and the other is Cascade Complete. The problem is my water is really soft and doesn't do good with powdered detergent.

Is there a way I could mix this with boiling water to make it liquid/gel based instead? Have any of you tried this?

I have found some cute, very new looking clothes at the thrift store that I am giving my grandkids. If I find any adult clothes that look like new that my kids might wear I will be getting them and giving them as Christmas gifts. Just wondering if anyone out there gives some of there better thrift store finds as gifts?

Feeding dogs on a budget!

We have dogs in our family and getting rid of them isn't an option to me right now because they are part of my family. So to be able to feed them on our very tight budget I have started cooking rice and mixing in with the dog food. It has stretch the life of a bag of dog food by 3x. You can get a 20# bag of rice for $8.99 and it will last us 2 months if we just us it for feeding the dogs. I cook a cup of rice mix in a cup of dog food I add 1 raw egg (helps their coat) and a tad bit of minced garlic (helps get rid of fleas) and any leftover cornbread. The dogs love it and the rice, egg and corn is easy on their digestive systems. My boston terriers are known for having baaaaaddddd gas, since feeding them this mix they are almost gas free.

So if you have 4 legged family members and even just want to give them a healthy alternative or need to lower the cost of the dogs grocery bill give this a try. I feel like it is worth the effort.

I don't. I suspect this year will be a tight one for us and that is OK. I provide well for my children year around and they've yet to ever go without anything. On the other hand, even if it is a financially tight holiday, I still will be providing them food, heat, and a house to live in.

Since getting my grandkids and increasing our grocery bill by 3 children, one drinking formula, I have to really start watching even closer with the money and groceries that I buy. A friend told me about a local charity that you can visit once a month and they will give you a few bags of groceries and they have a clothes closet you can take a set amount of items from. A local church supports this charity.
Does anyone have local charities that are similar and do you use them when times get real tough and you need the help?
