Saving for University

When my mom died, she left us some money, and we've put it away for ds since before he was born. It has amounted to about 70K right now. It is in a conservative mutual fund that is doing pretty well right now. We have it in our names, but it is earmarked for him.

Ds is 8, which means we have about 10 more years before we need to worry about having the cash. When we bought this house, we took an $20K out of that money my mom left us (so his amounts now would be 90K) to help us with our down payment. Now I wish we never touched it. Dh used to get fabulous bonuses (30K/year) and now they have evaporated. We were going to 'pay back' his account with the now extinct bonus.

I figure I want to save $30 a week x 14 years = $20K to pay his University account back. Ds is definitely going to have to pay some towards University, he will have no knowledge of this $$ until the time comes.

My first question: Is there any advantage of setting up another educational account (529?) I don't want it in his name, and I don't want to be tied down to where he goes to school. I also don't want it earmarked Only for school. What would the advantage be of doing an education fund rather than our mutual fund? We've had it for 10 years as well and it has done consistently well.

#2 Has anyone done anything like a 'student' loan from Mom and Dad? As in, we will lend him a certain amount of $$, as a loan, make it legal that he needs to pay us back, (not the whole University amount), in order for him not to have to take out student loans? I am totally against student loans for him, I don't want him starting off in debt.

I could use some advice, but, I have to say, (nicely) :) that I don't need advice that student loans aren't so bad, etc. or that someone they knew worked 5 jobs in order to pay for University. That is great, but is not what we are planning to do. Thank you if you made it through this long post!!

so if anyone's been to the irs.gov site, they have kind of a refund estimator; anyways, according to my #'s we'll be getting aroun $5k back this year. We pay a lot in mortgage interest (almost $5k a yr. since we refinanced in 05). We don't make a lot of money by any means.:Ha Ha: My question is can I take the w/holdings (currently w/hold 0 on my w4 and dh's) and change them so we get a lot smaller refund and bigger paychecks. They w/hold under 1k a yr for dh's fed. inc. tax but could I do that if our mortgage interest is the cause of our big refund? Hope this makes some sense. TIA

Hello ladies

Yesterday I got a phone call that I had been impatiently waiting for. Last week we had gone to the bank to switch our mortgage to a local bank. We previously had our mortgage with a bank outside of our province. So at the same time we decided to ask them to consolidate our dept and put it all on our mortgage so that we would only have one payment per month and that would leave us with alot of money left at the end of the month. I know it's not the smartest financial move but well worth the extra time I get to have with my kids. I work 10 hour shifts 4 days per week at the moment, and now I will be able to drop it down to 1-2 per week. I'm soo excited!

Any budgets would be wonderfuL!!!! I'm trying to save up for a car and I gotta get my finances on track...

How much would you have to win or inherit to be able to retire today?

This answer would be different for everyone. Depends on where you live, what kind of income would need to be replace, how much debt you have, how old you are.

What dollar amount would you need today in order to be completely financially free?

Do you have any that you're will to share? Do you have a plan to achieve your goal? And, lastly, how long, do you think, will it take you to achieve this goal?

Our current goal is six months living expenses put away. When DH was laid off awhile back we went through our savings. We've since started our own business and we're doing OK but, with it being our own business, our income isn't exactly what you would call stable. We really need that savings for the times that the income is down.

I do have a bit of a plan but I think it needs a bit more thinking involved ... needless to say I was very excited this morning when I saw Kim was starting another Forget the Joneses Boot Camp on November 16. Check it out here! http://mommysavers.com/boards/forget...ml#post1103315
