My mother told me she is going to collect $1100 a month for disability. As long as I can remember, she has not worked consistently.. because she is lazy.. not disabled. She does have some minor conditions which she does not do anything to help herself. She gets no exercise, smokes, horrible diet, etc. That is fine but don't expect taxpayers to pay your bills. This my own mother, I just don't know how long I can bite my tongue about this.

How would you feel if this was your relative?

In order to collect disability in your state, don't you have to have a doctor evaluate your condition and verify that you are unable to work?

A friend's husband sustained a severe (and permanent) injury to his neck vertebrae, and even after he got affidavits from his primary, an orthopedist, AND a neurologist, the state STILL made him see THEIR doctor, who said that he was not disabled.

If it were my mom, I would speak my mind, even though it probably won't accomplish anything other than letting her know that you're not fooled and you're not pleased.

I have a family member who is the same way, doesn't get as much disability and fights for any state rights she thinks she deserves. She is lazy and has the "why work when I can watch tv, smoke, and drink soda pop and eat junk food for free".

-I hate it, but I just ignore it and we don't GIVE/LEND money when this family members asks for it. There comes a time at 55 years of age to depend on yourself not others.-Sorry to hi-jack and vent.

Perfect strangers do it to you everyday, at least this one you know. Sorry, that's my dry humor. It irratates me when people use the system. My best friend lives with a doctor but since they aren't married the taxpayers paid for their baby's birth. Nice.

I bite my tounge about it to her but don't see her very often. If you see your mother a lot it may be harder to bite your tounge. Good luck, you know best how she'll react or if it's even worth saying anything about.

This is my mother. We don't give her any money. She complains about not having gas money but she has a cigarette, guaranteed.

I have no idea how my mother got away with this. We also have friends that are entitled to disability and were declined.

I have spoke my mind about many other things, it never seems to help. That is why I chose to change the subject when she told me.

Sounds like there's not much you can do then, beyond refusing to give her money, and refusing to listne to her talk about what she's done, which you're already doing.
She obviously has managed to somehow finagle the necessary documentation. You could contact the authorities and tell them that you suspect fraud, but if she has all the paperwork, then you can't prove anything.
That sucks all around - for you, for folks that really do need those funds and can't get them, and for those of us who are paying the bill for it all.

It's a shame that people that need it can't get it and people that don't need it get it.

My friend's husband has had several major surgeries, his job let him go since he can't do his job anymore due to the surgeries, had been fighting for disability forever and gets declined. Now he had to get a lawyer.

Sometimes you just have to let it go as it will do no good if you say anything. This is a source of irritation for me and some family members as well.

I can't stand it that so many abuse the system just because they lack a work ethic and like handouts while others who truely need it can't get anything.
