Both my kids had bunk beds in their rooms for many years. We had the type that you can use as two single beds, or convert into bunk beds. They worked out really well for us. Now my guys have loft beds. The only pain, with both types, is changing the sheets.

We have bunk beds for my 9 & 6 yr olds. The 9 yr old is on top. We really like them, but they are not recommended that anyone under 6 be on top.

We bought bunk beds when our dd's were very little, but used them as separate twin beds until our oldest turned 6. Then, we stacked them up. No problems with injuries. However, making the beds (especially changing sheets on the top one), is a pain!

Now, our dd's have separate rooms. One kept the bunk beds, and one has a trundle bed - both of which are great for sleepovers. And, when we have grandparents visiting, they get the trundle bed while dd's use the bunk beds.

Both bunk beds and trundles free up a lot of room space.

We have a bunk bed from Ikea. It has a twin on top, double on bottom and we love it. I still co-sleep with DD (3yrs), so I sleep with her on the bottom bunk, and our 8 yr old DD sleeps on top. Both love it. DD8 had her own room, and decided to move her things into that room since she wanted to sleep in there all the time.

The Ikea brand seems to have quite a lot of head room on the bottom bunk as well, compared to others I've seen.

The downfalls are that our 3 year old likes to climb up to the top every chance she gets, and she can't quite get back down by herself. Our particular bed has the ladder attached so we can't remove it during the day.

Changing sheets (already mentioned) is also a pain, but our 8 yr old helps with that, so it's not too bad.
